Page Ahead

Page Ahead Page Ahead is closing the literacy opportunity gap for kids furthest from educational opportunity. Succeeding begins with reading.

Literacy can make the difference between the poverty of one generation and the promise of the next. Page Ahead helps children realize their potential by providing them with the inspiration to read. Page Ahead operates on one simple and astounding fact: being read to as a youngster is the foremost predictor of academic success in childhood. If a child can read at grade level by 3rd grade, she will

continue to read at grade level throughout her academic career. A child who succeeds in school will remain there, earning a chance at a better job and a better life in the years ahead. A child who lacks early exposure to reading often suffers from low self-esteem, struggles academically, and is at higher risk for substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and delinquency. Children with literacy problems typically come from low-income families, have no books at home, and have caregivers who are not aware of the importance of reading to their children. Yet studies have proven, beyond dispute, that access to age-appropriate books and reading aloud to children are essential to developing language and reading skills. Page Ahead was founded in 1990 as "Books for Kids" by individuals from the Seattle Chamber of Commerce's "Leadership Tomorrow" program. This team of volunteers developed the concept and raised money to hire a coordinator to operate the program. Books for Kids established its own office in October, 1994. The name was changed to Page Ahead in 2001. Since 1990 Page Ahead has placed over 4 million new books into the hands of more than 950,000 at-risk children through collaborations with schools, social service agencies, preschools, and early childhood centers across Washington State. Our Mission Statement

Guided by the fact that literacy is essential to lifelong success, Page Ahead provides new books and develops reading activities that empower at-risk children.

We had so much fun on Friday at our first-ever book drive with the Seattle Storm and PEMCO Insurance. Thank you to all of our volunteers, the dedicated Seattle Storm fans, and our generous sponsor, PEMCO, for helping us make this event a huge success. It was an absolute slam dunk!

Not only did we meet our 1,000 book goal--we obliterated it! With a generous Storm matching gift of $5,000, Page Ahead will be able to provide 2,464 brand-new books to kids who need them most.

We're so excited for this partnership! See everyone tomorrow night. Go Storm!

As booksellers and booklovers, we know books are gifts like no other; they allow everyone to walk in someone else's shoes, learn about the wonders both in our world and imaginary realms, or provide joy and inspiration during difficult times. 📚

Thats why we are partnering with the folks at Page Ahead again, helping underprivileged children get access to books that can give them that joy and inspiration✨. Between now and December 12th, make a child's holiday really special by donating a younger reader book from our store as you do your holiday shopping.

Thank you to our amazing volunteers who show up every single month to keep the shelves full, and to our supporters who make it all possible.
