In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Marisa Mender-Franklin was a teacher in Memphis, Tennessee, busy planning her wedding, with no real land of her own to pursue her dream of becoming an urban flower farmer.

Rather than letting that stop her, she turned to her local Facebook Buy Nothing group, where members began offering up their unused yards and backyard spaces for her to plant on, completely free of charge. What started as one small favor slowly grew into something much bigger, as more and more neighbors joined in.

Today, Mender-Franklin runs nine separate flower farms scattered across Memphis, all built entirely on borrowed land from generous neighbors. She now gives back through her Flowers for Good program, donating blooms to local schools and charities, alongside a free seed library for anyone in the community hoping to grow their own garden.
