Finding light in ancient traditions

The Lecture Series offers a home in the Pacific Northwest for all whose spiritual journey leads them to explore a progressive Christian theology as evidenced by the life and teachings of Jesus, and that promotes love, justice and compassion as expressed in the world’s great faith traditions.

We are delighted to welcome back Dr. John J. Thatamanil, to speak as part of our 2020: All This Joy, All This Sorrow online series. John spoke with us in 2011 on religious diversity, and his exploration of this topic has deepened over the years to become the basis of his new book Circling the Elephant.

John was born in India and came to the United States as a child with his immigrant parents. As 'a child of two worlds, belonging wholly to neither but caught somewhere in between' John understands that differences of culture and religion can be gift, and in opening ourselves to this gift we see God in a new light.

At such a time as this, among the deep environmental, racial, economic and moral sorrows of our broken world, opening ourselves to the 'hospitality of receiving' other religions can be a path to transformation and joy. This conversation with John and Catherine promises to be full of surprises and delight!

Please join us for this hopeful conversation and joyful storytelling. The lamentation of John Denver’s "All This Joy, All This Sorrow," offers an inspiration, soundtrack, and poetry for the series. Register at the link below. Tickets start at $0.

The Lecture Series is back!
Join us for a fall online speaker series '2020: All This Joy, All This Sorrow' scheduled for Friday evenings, 7 pm, October 23, 30, and November 6.

2020 has been a year like none other in our memories. The profound and widespread grief of this year has been overwhelming. Perhaps, it is only by walking through such grief that we are awakened to the possibilities of hope, transformation, and joy. This series invites speakers familiar and new to our UCUCC / Lecture Series audience to share what they are currently working on and to reflect on a deep grief and a deep joy each has experienced in 2020. Where can we find hope in a year such as this?

Watch for registration and speaker details to be announced soon.

The lamentation of John Denver’s All This Joy, All This Sorrow, offers an inspiration, soundtrack, and poetry for the series. Licensing restrictions prevent us from linking to the song here, but we encourage you to find it on YouTube or other streaming service.
