The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) affirmed today that dyslexia, a reading disability, is entirely unrelated to a person's intelligence or cognitive potential. Dyslexic individuals possess the capacity to think, lead, and achieve at the highest levels, and countless have gone on to accomplish extraordinary achievements across every field.
IDA stands firmly in support of dyslexic learners by advancing evidence-based reading instruction grounded in the science of reading, while also championing the unique strengths, resilience, and potential that define this community.

The Washington Branch of the International Dyslexia Association stands with LDA and NCLD in support of individuals with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. We are concerned by recent disparaging comments about dyslexia in the media. Such statements reinforce harmful misconceptions about a condition that affects millions of individuals and has no relationship to intelligence.
Dyslexia is a neurobiological, language-based learning difference, not a measure of intelligence or potential. With appropriate, evidence-based instruction, individuals with dyslexia can and do succeed. Misinformation contributes to stigma and can discourage families from seeking support.
We remain committed to promoting accurate understanding, early identification, and effective literacy instruction so every student has the opportunity to thrive. For accurate information on dyslexia, please read the revised definition from the International Dyslexia Association on their website. For a list of some presidents with dyslexia, please see The Gow School’s website. The International Dyslexia Association also has success stories and invites individuals to share their own.
