Hawaiian/Northwest multi-instrumentalist Jonny Akamu has been performing on guitar, ukulele, banjo, and bass for 22 years and teaching students of all ages and levels for 13 years. Jonny plays and teaches folk, rock, blues, jazz, funk, classical, Hawaiian slack key, bluegrass, flamenco, songwriting, and improvisation. He performs in rock bands, folk groups, jazz ensembles, and solo all around the
Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii, including 6 times on the Triple Door main stage. “He picks and strums so fast you’d think you were watching time-lapse photography of his clockwork hands” -KEXP Triple Door show
Jonny loves sharing music. As a teacher, he finds nothing more rewarding than seeing kids and adults discover their instruments and improve their playing. He uses games to teach fundamental techniques so students can learn and play their favorite songs. Some of his former students are now performing musicians and have been semifinalists at the EMP Sound Off, a battle of the bands for teenagers. Jonny is also a songwriter and made it to the finals in the American Songwriter Awards.
