Congratulations to Matt Christian, incoming Student Development Administration (SDA) student, on receiving the 2024 Inclusive Excellence Award for his work as an advocate for students and families as a Student Financial Services Operations Specialist.
The Inclusive Excellence Award recognizes an individual who spearheads work efforts to create environments, projects, processes, or initiatives that create or enhance inclusivity and belonging across identities, groups, and differences. Matt’s work on behalf of students applying for financial aid this year is a prime example of those qualities!
In early 2024, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) experienced technical glitches that hindered hundreds of Seattle U students, especially students with undocumented family members, from completing the application and receiving financial aid. Matt immediately went to work, going above and beyond his job responsibilities to research solutions, create training manuals for colleagues, as well as spend countless hours with students and families to help them complete the FAFSA.
“Our most vulnerable students, the ones who need the most financial support, were disproportionately affected,” Matt says. “So my question was, how do we help support these students?”
Faculty who work with Matt also recognized his effort. “Throughout this past year, Matt worked tirelessly to support current and incoming students, particularly of marginalized identities and first generation, to complete the FAFSA and make sure information received truly reflected individual and family situations,” says Professor Erin Swezey, Program Director for SDA.
Matt is looking forward to beginning the SDA program this Fall: “I’m always looking to connect with students in different ways across campus, and I think this is an opportunity to connect with students in new ways.”
We’re proud of you, Matt, and lucky to have you at the College of Education!
