Way back in September, PreK discovered a caterpillar in their garden! What began as a caterpillar rescue mission turned into an incredible opportunity for learning. After spending winter in its cocoon, it emerged as a Polyphemus moth! The children were amazed to finally see the adult moth after months of wondering and learning about each stage of its transformation, and we feel similar awe and pride at the students’ own growth over the course of this school year. Today is their annual end-of-year Chrysalis Ceremony, and we are so excited to celebrate our youngest Meridian Monarchs!

Our PreKindergarten classroom has transformed to match the Olympic National Park and a farmers’ market! Our Monarchs have loved playing in the same environments they are learning about during their land unit.

Third grade’s field trip to KUOW is all thanks to a Monarch who wrote a letter to Kim Malcolm, and she kindly replied and invited the class in for a special studio tour! Students got a behind-the-scenes look at how radio shows are produced and even had the opportunity to record their own mock interviews with Kim Malcolm. Thank you, KUOW!

Our youngest scientists got to look at insects from the Burke Museum, so they could explore real insect specimens! While observing the insects, they practiced journaling in their new Nature Journals that will follow them throughout their time here at Meridian.

Fourth graders got to study historical artifacts and archival materials up close thanks to the Museum of History and Industry! As they learn more about the history of Seattle and the Puget Sound region, experiences like this help them make real-world connections to their classroom learning.
