The Maya were advanced mathematicians and only one of two cultures in the world and the only culture in the whole of the American continent, to create the number zero!

Zero is represented by a shell; 1 to 4 are represented by dots, and multiples of five are represented by lines. The Maya wrote their numbers from top to bottom rather than from left to right and were able to calculate extremely large numbers, unlike for example, the Romans.

Today we use a numeral system based on base 10 and learn to count on our hands. The Mayan numeral system is based on base 20, and counted on their fingers and toes.

Celebrate with us the Native American contributions in maths by exploring the science and engineering ingenuity of Native American Tipis!

🟡 A tipi’s cone-shape and oblong base makes it aerodynamic and stable against strong winds while also creating room to sit around a fire.

🟡 The gap between the interior liner and outside cover produce a convection current that circulates air in the tipi for cooking and warmth while pulling smoke out through the opening at the top.

🟡 Adjustable flaps around the smoke hole help draw the smoke out as the wind changes direction.

🟡 Wood pegs on the tipi poles help guide water down the poles, and a shallow moat can be dug around the tipi during heavy rainfall to keep the inside dry.

Did you know that the Incas used a decimal number system like we do today? Quipu were used to keep records and communicate information using string and knots. The type and position of the knots, as well as the color of the strings, were used to record numbers, dates and maybe even text.

The Zeno Story

Founded in 2003 as Explorations in Math, Zeno was created by Norman Alston and a group of parents at Wilder Elementary School in Woodinville, WA. They observed the impact that a positive math culture had on student’s success. As Norman wrote in a 2004 article “we [Zeno] have a big idea. We want to nurture and grow a math culture in all Seattle schools by providing a variety of fun, unique and stimulating enrichment activities throughout the year for students, their parents and teachers...”

Our initial entry in 2015 into Seattle’s early learning community was accelerated through a few key partnerships. CISC developed quickly into a flourishing partnership that allowed us to explore preschool, drop-in, and home visit settings. Atlantic Street Center soon followed, affording significant sharing and learning opportunities. We’re grateful for these initial supporters in providing fun early math resources to families. We quickly moved from a handful of classrooms and fewer than 100 families served in 2015 to over 70 classrooms, home visit agencies, and drop-in sites, and over 1500 families served in spring of 2018.

As we strive to meet the demands of families, we intend to retain our foundational approach – facilitating positive, fun, and engaging experiences with math, continuously monitoring and improving our programming, and working to reach those with the greatest need, all while expanding reach from the Puget Sound region to Washington State and beyond. To that end, our explicit focus on families of color in low-income communities, will be the cornerstone of our strategy and activities moving forward.
