2026 Zero+ Champion of Sustainability Spotlight: Seattle Colleges

Seattle Central College is planning to heat half a million square feet without a steam plant. The EcoDistrict taking shape there will circulate 160-degree hot water between campus buildings using air-to-water and water-to-water heat pumps, retiring an aging steam system and leaving room to serve neighboring properties later.

Monica Brown, president of South Seattle College accepted the 2026 Zero+ Champion of Sustainability award for Seattle Colleges at Lumen Field on October 11. Backed by roughly $2.28 million in sustainability grants, the district is advancing solar, energy-efficiency and district energy projects across all three colleges.

Did you catch a glimpse of the spectacular and tasty for Olivia Otter's 10th birthday at Otter Fest?

That work of art was crafted by none other than our amazing Pastry Arts students, along with support and guidance by Chef Kim Mahar! Those FSD 185 students worked tirelessly on cake creation skills in the past few weeks to bring the birthday girl her favorite flavor, decorated with flair and detail. From the delicate piping work to the custom made fondant South Seattle College logo and lettering, this cake was something else!
