Who knew it could be so risky to be a librarian? But according to WaPo, librarians in some parts of the US could face fines up to $1,000 and up to a year in prison if they are caught lending certain books to kids under 18. Last fall, there were over 300 attempts at book censorship. This is the highest rate in over 30 years when the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom started monitoring this. What titles were targeted? Mostly those concerning race, racism, and LGBTQIA+ matters.
What can we do to keep our libraries from becoming a tool of white supremacy and oppression? How can we support our librarians?
Join us for a zoom discussion with North Seattle College’s own librarians.
This Thursday, April 7th, at 2pm. Zoom link: tinyurl.com/NSCLibrary
