ON CRITICS AND CRITICISMS
"Beethoven's symphonies were not applauded in Paris until after Beethoven's death. A Midsummer Night's Dream Overture was a fiasco at the Paris Conservatory (I was there) some twenty-five years ago, and during Mendelssohn's lifetime they did not play a single note he had composed. Examples of this kind abound and prove unquestionably two things at once: that the public is only infallible at the last appeal, and that every composer with a failure on his hands has not for that reason the right to consider himself a Beethoven or a Mendelssohn!"
"If the critic is not also an artist, if he is unable to practice what he professes to preach, one mistrusts his expert judgment (and one is probably right to do so ), and one denies that he is competent to understand and criticize the results. If as a critic he is solemn and severe, people will laugh at him for failing to understand the inner processes at work and will regard his severity as rage and impotence. Artists will spurn him, and whatever he may do he will suffer not only the hatred but also the contempt of those on whom he lavishes the most extravagant praise.
"A critique that dwells only on the defects of a work of art is itself open to criticism; it should discover and bring out also its redeeming features. An absence of defects does not make a work of art, but an absence of beauty condemns it. “
"Would not the best result of criticism be for it to inspire the artist to renewed creativity?"

So true
As we mourn 500,000 COVID deaths in the US, I was reminded of this quote from David Kessler. When he said it during our conversation about grief on Unlocking Us, it hit me as truth.
Often a number like 500,000 seems too big to get our heads and hearts around. The loss seems incomprehensible. But as our friends, family, and neighbors reckon with their grief, and do so without funerals and many of the important witnessing rituals that are part of our healing, it's important to remind them that they are seen, loved, and not alone.
This is the full quote:
“Each person's grief is as unique as their fingerprint. But what everyone has in common is that no matter how they grieve, they share a need for their grief to be witnessed. That doesn't mean needing someone to try to lessen it or reframe it for them. The need is for someone to be fully present to the magnitude of their loss without trying to point out the silver lining.”

’m happy to share that Vy has been really excited about practicing the piano after the first lesson with you – she was happy to play the song you guys made up and practiced her prior songs, every day, singing it in English and translating it to Vietnam! This never happened before and we often had to remind her to practice without much success.
