Your Old Magazines & Junk Mail Have a Second Life
I’m launching a new art project — a series of collages, each 9” x 12”, linked to my book Setting Ourselves Free. The raw material is print: the everyday visual world that carries big assumptions without anyone quite noticing.
The pile on my table is just the beginning.
The project covers a wide range of topics — from aging and animals to war, water, and working-class labor; from cinema and colonialism to surveillance, sexuality, and sports.
I’m collecting materials. Specifically:
— Magazines of any kind — old or recent
— Advertisements and standalone inserts
— Junk mail with strong visuals or bold type
— Travel and promotional materials — especially anything performing a particular image of a country or people
— Foreign-language publications of any kind
— Anything with strong tropical or nature photography
— Anything with bold headlines
National Geographic, Life, Time, Look — local, national, international. Anything visually rich.
Magazines and coated paper only please — no newspapers.
If you have a stack gathering dust, I want it. I’ll come to you, or we can figure out shipping. Drop me a message. And please share this with anyone who might be a source — librarians, teachers, estate cleaners, collectors.
More to come as this takes shape.
