Washington State Opportunity Scholarship launches Washington students into high-demand careers. Social Media Policy.

This week, WSOS received a $300,000 Right Now Grant from the BECU Foundation. With our 1:1 state match, that means $600,000 to support Opportunity Scholars and expand outreach across Washington, helping students furthest from opportunity learn about pathways to education and high-demand careers.

Thinking back on a memorable Sunday afternoon at T-Mobile Park! We were honored to be recognized as a Microsoft Community Partner and had a chance to celebrate in the Home Plate Club. It was an incredible opportunity to shine a light on WSOS’s mission to build Washington’s workforce by creating pathways for Washington students to living-wage careers in STEM, health care and the trades — this time on the jumbotron in front of thousands!

We connect talented students furthest from opportunity with the industries that most need their skills. Together, we're creating economic mobility in local communities and investing in our state's future by helping students reach their educational and career goals. A new proposal in Washington state would require high school seniors to complete the FAFSA, WASFA, or opt out before graduation. In his announcement, Governor Ferguson said, "Washington provides more free money for students to attend college or job training than virtually any other state in the nation, yet we haven't demonstrated the same commitment to helping students access that money."

The goal is simple: help more students unlock scholarships, grants, and financial aid for college, apprenticeships, and career training, so every student has the opportunity to plan for what's next.

For Opportunity Scholars, completing the FAFSA or WASFA is a critical step, as it is required for scholarship eligibility and selection.

This past summer, Opportunity Scholar Sheamin brought her talent and drive to consulting firm West Monroe, where she built skills, made connections, and moved closer to the future she’s been working toward.

Her story is a reminder that internships aren’t just resume builders — they’re launchpads.

Washington high school seniors are taking their next step — and our partners are making it possible.

Completing the FAFSA/WASFA helps students understand what support is available and makes education and career pathways feel more possible and more affordable.

Across Washington, partners are working together to increase access and remove barriers — especially to students furthest from opportunity. This year, 10 schools saw a 6% increase in FAFSA completion and received grants from Microsoft to celebrate their students and their plans for what’s next.

At five schools, WSOS also raffled off laptops that saw the largest increases in both FAFSA/WASFA completion and WSOS Baccalaureate applications.

When students know what support is available, they can move forward with confidence.

Opportunity Scholars recently visited HNTB for an up-close look at a live construction site.

From infrastructure design to on-the-ground ex*****on, Scholars explored how transportation projects come to life and connected with professionals shaping Washington’s future.
