Kasparov Backs Sindarov, Opens Door for Carlsen Return!
Legendary former World Champion Garry Kasparov has shared his thoughts on the potential outcome of the 2026 World Championship match, and he’s clearly impressed with rising Uzbek star Javokhir Sindarov.
In an interview with the Saint Louis Chess Club, Kasparov praised Sindarov’s exceptional form, highlighting his timing, precision, and ability to both absorb and apply pressure at the highest level. “I must say, it’s hard to impress me, but the way he played, his timing, the quality of his moves, his ability to withstand pressure and increase the pressure on his opponents was exceptional,” Kasparov noted.
Looking ahead to the World Championship clash, Kasparov sees Sindarov as a slight favorite over reigning champion Gukesh Dommaraju. However, he emphasized that match play is a completely different challenge, where Gukesh’s mental resilience and defensive skills could prove crucial.
The matchup promises a fascinating generational battle, the 19-year-old World Champion against the 20-year-old challenger. Yet Kasparov also reminded fans that experience still matters, pointing to Magnus Carlsen as the strongest player in the world.
In a tantalizing remark, Kasparov added:
“Maybe if Sindarov beats Gukesh, then there will be a chance to bring Magnus back and see how things go.”
Sindarov secured his place in the title match by winning the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 with a round to spare, setting up a blockbuster World Championship clash at the end of 2026.
A new era is rising , but could the king return for one more epic battle?
