Seattle University Public Interest Law Foundation and the Access to Justice Institute kicked off the American Bar Association's 2023 Celebration of Pro Bono with a talk from Pete Talevich ’09, partner at K&L Gates LLP, Scott Collins, former managing attorney at Helsell Fetterman, and Jeff Liang ‘09, partner at Banyan Legal Counsel. The three panelists, who engage in legal volunteer work alongside their day-to-day work, dispelled the myth that pro bono work and private practice are mutually exclusive.

Saturday was such a remarkable event filled with love, joy, and a reminder from Angela Rye that without transformation, we cannot achieve justice for ourselves and others in need of assistance.

Thank you to our sponsors, volunteers, staff, and attendants for coming out in support of Seattle University's law school students for this upcoming summer. Until next year!

Meet Joseph Phillippi, a rising 2L at Seattle University School of Law and one of our Summer 2022 Grantees!

This summer, Joseph is working for the Unemployment Law Project (ULP). He found this work through Ms. Cindy Yeung’s recommendation at the NW Public Service Career Fair.

He knew that he would gain valuable experience in conducting intake interviews and representing clients in administrative hearings throughout the summer, but did not realize the extent to which this job would turn me into a borderline expert and total nerd about Washington unemployment law!

For the remainder of his summer with ULP, he is finishing work on an appellate brief to be filed in the Fall, and will continue to take case assignments as a hearing representative on occasion. Afterwards, he will be transition into a volunteer role with ULP.

In his free time, Joseph loves to cook, get out in nature, and try to find time to connect with family on the East Coast - especially his rad little nieces and nephews.

All Summer 2022 Grantees are to fill out the form sent to your emails on whether or not you wish to be featured on our spotlight post. Please let us know!
