Understanding Children's Art 04/25/2023

“Psychologists and art therapists know that children's art can tell us about the children in ways beyond what appears on the page, but it requires, as Jean Piaget's protege Eleanor Duckworth puts it, listening with your whole body. When we study children's art, looking only for evidence of geometric development, we miss the things we've been conditioned to ignore: the connectedness of meaning and understanding. It might show up on the page, but it might also be completely found in their process.”

Can we gush about Teacher Sayuri for a minute? She teaches our very popular Drawing & Painting class and has developed a new class for 8-11 year olds called Studio Art that will be starting after spring break.

Sayuri has been teaching at Roaring Mouse for many years. She has spearheaded many of our Holiday Gift Making projects, bringing her creativity and ingenuity to everything she does. She is a patient and kind teacher and a beloved colleague.

Sayuri’s love for art started long before she can remember. Her favorite thing to draw as a child was the seed-head of a dandelion. Since then, Sayuri graduated from University of California, Santa Barbara with a BA in Studio Art. She was also a long time Art Docent for Sacajawea Elementary School, and sent the seeds of her childhood dandelion doodles to bloom in the utmost beauty for others. She really takes great pleasure in teaching and creating art with young people who are ready to explore their own creative possibilities.

Visit for info about Sayuri’s upcoming classes (Drawing & Painting and Studio Art). 🎨🐭❤️

Did you know that planning for Holiday Gift Making starts long before most people are thinking about the holidays? It is truly a team effort from start to finish. We start several months before the classes, dreaming up projects, brainstorming ideas, and creating the class schedule. Next comes the fun part: testing out gift ideas, playing and experimenting with materials, and making sure the projects will be appropriate for the various age groups attending Holiday Gift Making classes.

Then there's ordering supplies, figuring out packaging, and mapping out the best way to help students complete the gifts in the time allotted, all in an effort to create a memorable experience for the students and beautiful, well thought out, heartfelt gifts for their loved ones.

By late November, our studio looks like a workshop with our team of Teacher Elves organizing, troubleshooting, and prepping materials for the first week of Holiday Gift Making - which always starts right after Thanksgiving.

This brings us to TODAY: Holiday Gift Making EVE!

With classes starting this week, we wanted to let you know we have a few spots left in our Tuesday class and one spot left in our Wednesday class.

Holiday Gift Making is a long standing tradition at Roaring Mouse. These workshops have been offered since before we even had a studio! This year, we are thrilled to restore this program to its pre-pandemic glory, with a wide variety of options for you to choose from depending on your child's age and schedule. Whether you have a toddler or a teenager, we've got a Holiday Gift Making (HGM) class for you!

Students will make a variety of high quality, useful and sometimes whimsical, handmade gifts for the upcoming holiday season. Projects are secret, of course! If your child has participated in HGM in the past, you know how special the gifts are. We hear from parents all the time who tell us that they still have the gifts that were made for them on display years later. This warms our little mouse hearts!

Please join us in celebrating this season by giving your child a chance to discover the joy of making and giving gifts to the people they love.

Some happy corners of the studio.

"It's The Magic" 08/18/2022

“The questions "What is it?" or "What does it mean?" are requests to translate the artwork into words. Some things cannot be said in words. That's what art is all about, after all. No one ever asks, say, an Iron Chef, "What does this mean?" It's food: it's flavor and texture and temperature. We all know it doesn't mean anything other than itself. Like Dali's paintings, or the scribbling of a two-year-old, this delicious plate in front of us just is. Both Dali and a two-year-old are using the tools of art to express something that cannot be translated into words. That's why it could only be expressed as art.”

"It's The Magic" I heard her mother saying, "What is it?" Her daughter, a two-year-old, was scribbling on a piece of paper with a marker crea...
