Happening TODAY!

Save Antibiotics Forum
Thursday, November 19
5:30-7PM
STCN 210

"We have a public health crisis on our hands. 80% of antibiotics in the U.S. are used in agriculture, largely to compensate for stressful, crowded, filthy conditions in factory farms. This overuse of antibiotics is creating antibiotic-resistant bacteria that threaten everyone’s health.

The powerful agricultural and pharmaceutical industries are using their political power to weaken any attempt at regulation, despite the fact that 23,000 Americans die from antibiotic resistance infections each year.

We can make a difference and end this public health crisis. We're mobilizing broad public support from citizens, public health professionals and local organizations to show Senator Murray that people here in Seattle want our policymakers to end the irresponsible uses of antibiotics in livestock."

Hello everyone! I just wanted to give a quick notification of an awesome event happening on campus this week! The Food and Water Watch in Seattle will be holding a forum to discuss the dangers of antibiotic abuse on factory farms and create pressure in the media. The overuse of antibiotics makes as many as 2 million people sick in America each year due to increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria so this is a hugely pressing public health issue that would be awesome to explore further! The forum will be held at 5:30 pm on Thursday the 19th in Student Center 210. Please RSVP here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1V0JUFwfN_JQedGAHli9LhBj3qcyLdsKDbjy4xbJjTx0/viewform
if you want to come and feel free to bring a friend!

“Global Health” Must Mean Global Health | Xconomy 07/16/2015

An interesting read that challenges the common perspectives on "global health". Too often do we forget that state lines do not prevent the spread of disease...

“Global Health” Must Mean Global Health | Xconomy The research community and pharmaceutical industry have made many life-saving and life-improving advances in global health over the past 20 years, and that

All brigaders from the PHB Seattle U chapter have safely arrived in Panama! A lot later than expected due to their flight changes. But they are there and probably a mixture of excitement and exhaustion. :)

And they are off!! The Seattle U group in Miami has now left and are one step closer to being in Panama!

Hello Friends and Family!

Today is departure day! Our 16 volunteers will be departing this evening and traveling to Panama for the 2015 Medical Brigade. We will be working in the community of Cerro Cama in the Panama Oeste province. The community we are working with is predominately Latino, and located in the La Chorrera district, west of Panama City. We will be staying in a compound in San Carlos, which is on the western coast of Panama.

We will do our best to update this page during our trip, provided we have access to wifi. We thank you all so much for your contributions and support for all of our volunteers. We could not have done it without you!

Stay tuned for updates! ¡Nos Vemos!

Jonas Salk's Polio Vaccine Makes A Comeback 04/14/2015

Interesting read on the difference between oral and injectable vaccines! What are your thoughts? Is money saved worth the 1 in 750,000 chance?

Jonas Salk's Polio Vaccine Makes A Comeback As it marks its 60th birthday, the injectable vaccine is still critical. It's "needed to end polio for good," as Carol Pendak of Rotary's Polio Plus program puts it.
