Dr. Jillian Grant, a first-year prosthodontics resident, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 David H. Wands Fellowship in Graduate Prosthodontics.

The Wands Fellowship is the most prestigious endowed graduate fellowship in dentistry at the University of Washington and one of the largest private endowments awarded through any graduate prosthodontics program in the country. Dr. Grant is the 17th recipient of the honor.

“I’m very happy that [Dr. Grant] has received this award,” said Dr. Van Ramos, the Director of the UW Graduate Prosthodontics program. “She has proven herself, in just one year, to be the perfect candidate. Dr. Wands is looking for residents who have a bright future in the specialty and have a natural talent for teaching; she is just that person.”

Check out some of the sights and sounds from the Class of 2026 Hooding Ceremony 📸🎓

This year, Dean Ritter, Dr. Cameron Randall and (now) Dr. Rhianna Jackson each gave a memorable speech to the audience.

"As we move on to the rest of our lives carrying a title we have sought many years to attain, let us feel the weight that it holds daily...let us remember the great deal of responsibility for caring for the very real person in our chairs." - Dr. Rhianna Jackson.

"The world needs you right now. It needs the person who applied to dental school, the person we selected to join the University of Washington School of Dentistry community, the person we trained and the person you have become through that process." - Dr. Randall

We can't wait to see what each of our graduates goes on to do out in their communities and in the world!

Researchers in the UW School of Dentistry's Department of Restorative Dentistry are using oral bacteria transplants to treat bad breath.

"To rebalance the oral microbiome and cure chronic halitosis, researchers at the University of Washington are embarking on a first-of-its-kind experiment. These clinical trials transplant bacteria and other minuscule critters from healthy donors into patients with halitosis. If successful, the healthy microbiota will crowd out the bad and patients’ bad breath will improve."

Dr. Cheon Joo Yoon, Director of the RIDE Program in Spokane, has served around the globe as a dentist in the military. He’s been the lone dental provider in groups of over 4,000 personnel before.

Earlier this month, he was sent on a much different mission. Dr. Yoon and a team of U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine personnel traveled to a remote village called Akhiok on Kodiak Island in Alaska. The total population of Akhiok is around 40 people.

The 10-member team was sent to provide medical, dental and optometry services. “When we landed in the Black Hawk helicopter, many villagers and children came out to welcome us at the airstrip,” said Dr. Yoon. “We knew almost nothing about the people or the village, but their smiles stood strong even against the powerful winds and dusts from the helicopter blades.”

Over the course of the five days, Dr. Yoon and the rest of his team lived the lives of the Akhiok tribe; they ate their food, fished with them, played their sports and learned their culture.

The impact of the experience was profound: “Many of us became emotional in ways we never expected when we first landed there,” said Dr. Yoon. “Somewhere during those few days, we realized we had truly bonded and shared life together. The kindness, innocence, and generosity we experienced from the people of Akhiok is something none of us will ever forget.”
