Dear Seattle, the CID is not your talking point - International Examiner 09/28/2023

"We’ve had enough of leaders using the CID when it’s convenient — when it shows their community credentials, as a sad story to be gawked at or when it serves a political agenda like ‘justification’ for backroom deals. It’s time for leaders to commit to working with nonprofits and community members supporting the neighborhood to address systemic inequities, co-design strategies and solutions, and move the neighborhood to long-term vibrancy and prosperity. This is love for the CID in action."

Dear Seattle, the CID is not your talking point - International Examiner The Chinatown International District (CID) is hurting. The recent vandalism of the Wing Luke Museum showed that anti-Asian hate is alive and well. The cancellation of the CID Night Market was a blow to our small businesses, still hurting after the pandemic. Yet many in the media and positions of pow...

Should Latinos Be Considered a Race? 09/27/2023

"For a long time, the dominant thinking about Latinos was that they complicated the Black-white binary that has defined race in the United States. Recently, though, some Afro-Latinos have argued that Latinos have reinforced it. There are Black Latinos and white Latinos, who each experience the world differently. López has argued that Latinos’ different experiences stem from their “street race,” meaning how they are perceived when they walk down the street."

Should Latinos Be Considered a Race? A proposed change to the census faces opposition from Afro-Latino groups, and exposes conflicts among Latino communities.

'Working Class' Does Not Equal 'White' 08/29/2023

"Myths about race and class continue to dominate our political discourse. For a start, it is a myth that Americans without college degrees are, by definition, “working class.” Accumulated or inherited wealth is a more accurate indicator of class status than education (or salary), particularly amid an enormous racial wealth gap in the United States."

'Working Class' Does Not Equal 'White' In her new book, Blair LM Kelley explores an overlooked history: what it means to be a Black worker in the time since slavery.

Is Social Justice for the Birds? Audubon Attempts an Answer. 08/24/2023

A good example of why disaggregating data responses by race is an important .

"Around 43 percent of respondents said changing the name would have a negative impact on people’s ability “to feel they are a part of the organization,” while 35 percent said it would have a positive impact."

"The internal report, obtained by The New York Times, said the society faced intense pressure not to alienate “older, conservative individuals” who provide the organization with “generous funding, time and support” through dues and donations."

Is Social Justice for the Birds? Audubon Attempts an Answer. A battle over the group namesake’s ties to slavery grew into a conflict over diversity, highlighting complications that have arisen in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death.

Book battles are raging nationwide. A WA library could be nation’s first to close 08/16/2023

"The library, which has occupied the same modest brick building a block off Main Street for 86 years, is at risk not because of a lack of funding or a lack of demand for its services. Instead, it could shutter because of a yearlong dispute over the placement of, at first, one book, then a dozen and now well over 100, all dealing with gender, sexuality or race."

Book battles are raging nationwide. A WA library could be nation’s first to close A dispute over young adult books about race, gender and sexuality has landed a measure on the November ballot that could shutter Columbia County's only library.

Maui No Ka Oi, Maui on my mind 08/11/2023

Via Fakequity Friday: Maui No Ka Oi, Maui on my mind
(recommended donation links in comments)

"Now Maui needs that aloha and kōkua back. This isn’t a matter of charity, if you’ve ever vacationed in Hawai’i, contributed to climate change, eaten a SPAM musubi or Hawaiian plate lunch, watched Moana, contemplated naming your child or pet Malia, or romanticized about Hawai’i now is one of many times for you to give back to the Kānaka Maoli and the 'āina."
