ATTENTION ALL SLHS ALUMNI, FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS!

Many of you have asked about an opportunity to grab a yearbook or jersey that was SLHS for "old times sake." We are glad to be able to give you this opportunity to take home a piece of what was formerly SLHS.

Mark your calendars for March 23rd, 10 am to 3 pm to attend the SLHS memorabilia give-a-way. Yearbooks, uniforms, lanyards, SLHS post-it notes, gym bags, and backpacks will be on display at the Hope North buidling (formerly known as Seattle Lutheran High School) on the main first floor. If you would like a piece of SLHS history to keep as a memento we invite you to attend this event. This is a ONE-DAY EVENT ONLY.

Items that are currently on display in the Menashe Gym will NOT be offered at this event. Once we are able to have items removed from the walls, we will share a day and time on this page that items will be available to review.

Please feel free to share this post with other SLHS alumni and supporters. We do not have an email list of alumni and social media is the best way for us to reach people.

We are well into the new year and work is still continuing on the inside of Hope North. Great progress has been made with the boys bathroom, painting in the classrooms, floor refurbishing in the art room and the purchase of a scissors jack to reach those hard-to-reach places in the gym. We have a great crew working everyday, steady and sure, on numerous projects all at once. We are fortunate to have their expertise and time . When asked why they work so hard at this, their response is that it's for the future students.

Progress is being made! Half of the main floor has been painted, lights have been replaced, lockers and doors have been painted, plumbing in the boy's restroom is being worked on and the art room is currently being refreshed and cleaned out. Today 7th grade toured the building and were excited to see the spaces they will inhabit next year!

At the end of June the purchase of the former Seattle Lutheran High School property became final. Shortly after the sale, the sign was removed but not without acknowledging the history and tradition of SLHS, the memories, staff, parents and students who walked the hallways and called it home.

Longtime staff member Shirley Vradenbrugh, who arrived the second year the school was open, joined Hope Principal, Kristen Okabayshi, Hope Pastor, Rev. Peter Mueller, Family Life Minister, Patra Mueller, Parish Administrator, Jon Johnson and Hope Admissions Director, Sally Heit to pray over the building and thank God for this special school that played such an important part in the lives of many. And, to also humbly ask God for his guidance as Hope Lutheran Church and School make preparations to launch a new school campus called “Hope North” to serve area families and the surrounding community who are looking at middle school options for their students.

As Hope plans for the future we acknowledge the importance this building held in the community, and we invite the friends and alumni of Seattle Lutheran to join with us in creating a revitalized space for future middle school students.

In the spirit that was Seattle Lutheran HS, we invite you to consider volunteering your talents and time in helping to achieve our goal of a creating a new space for future 6th, 7th and 8th graders and bring life back into the hallways. There is no obligation; if you feel led you may check out the Signup Genius Link to see what opportunities are available.

We thank God for Seattle Lutheran High School and its community and for the opportunity Hope Lutheran Church and School has to continue Lutheran education in West Seattle.

‘Hope North’ middle school expansion coming soon: Hope Lutheran Church and School acquires former Seattle Lutheran High School property

July 3, 2023 – West Seattle, WA

Hope Lutheran Church and School has finalized the purchase of the former Seattle Lutheran High School property, with plans to launch a new school campus called “Hope North” to serve area families and the surrounding community who are looking at middle school options for their students.

Hope North will initially be a middle school expansion in Fall 2024, after necessary building improvements are made.

Hope Lutheran School has operated for more than 60 years at its original campus at 42nd Ave SW and Oregon St SW, serving students in preschool through 8th grade. The former Seattle Lutheran High School (SLHS) property is located one block north at 41st Ave SW and Genesee St SW.

SLHS had operated at the location from 1978 until 2022, when the Seattle Lutheran Board of Directors voted to close the school at the end of the 2021-2022 academic year. Throughout the existence of SLHS, neighboring Hope Lutheran served as a steadfast supporter and partner in the school’s mission, while utilizing the SLHS gym, parking lot and facilities in a mutually beneficial way.

“This is a huge step of faith for our Hope community,” said Hope Lutheran Senior Pastor Peter Mueller. “This purchase will be a source of great blessing to many people by securing new space in which to pursue the mission God has entrusted to us.”

The SLHS property was owned by the Lutheran High School Association of Washington, which voted in late November 2022 to sell the building and nearby parking lot to Hope. The congregation of Hope Lutheran then unanimously approved the agreement, and the sale was finalized this past week.

Kristen Okabayashi, who is beginning her 14th year as principal at Hope Lutheran School, said the rare chance to purchase a full-sized gymnasium, 14 classrooms and a parking lot is “a life-changing opportunity” for Hope School.

Okabayashi said that in recent years, both SLHS and West Seattle Christian Church “have been generous in sharing gym space to support Hope’s robust PE and athletic programs.” She added that moving Hope’s middle school to the north campus “gives our middle school students the chance to enjoy expanded educational offerings, explore their interests and have a campus of their own,” while also providing space to “expand our well-loved preschool to add multiple classrooms and meet the growing needs of the community around us.”

Jason Grotelueschen, chair of the Hope Lutheran Board of Directors, said that as the school ministry grows, Hope’s leaders will take time to assess the feasibility of adding additional grades and classes in the future, which may include high school.

“It’s exciting to be at this point,” Grotelueschen said, “and we have a lot of great work still to be done.” Grotelueschen said the Hope board and SLHS board have worked closely together, particularly for the past three years, to establish a solid plan for the future.

Patrick Gehring, president of the SLHS board, said that the history of SLHS and its impact on alumni and the surrounding community have left a strong legacy to build on.

“Such a special place,” Gehring said. “I can’t wait to see it once again filled with kids.”

Gehring added that, as part of the agreement to sell the former SLHS property to Hope, a portion of the proceeds will help fund an initial endowment for the Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament (LEST), to help ensure its longevity and success. LEST is an annual academic and athletic tournament for Lutheran schools in the Pacific Northwest, hosted at Pacific Lutheran University in February.

Hope Lutheran has kicked off a major capital campaign called Hope North: Building for the Next Generation to raise funds for this new mission opportunity. Proceeds from the campaign will serve to reduce the amount of debt incurred for the purchase and to fund crucial improvements to the building and property. For more information and to get involved, please visit our campaign’s webpage.

Sally Heit, Admissions Director at Hope Lutheran School, said that tours and open houses will be held throughout Fall of 2023 at Hope North and the main campus, and applications for Fall 2024 will be accepted during this time. To learn more about Hope North or to schedule a tour, please visit our webpage.

"This is an incredible opportunity for middle students in West Seattle,” Heit said, “and I'm looking forward to seeing where the journey takes us."

Many hands make light work. Thankfully we had some good hands and made a significant dent in getting the landscaping around and on campus. There is still a lot to do but the parking lot is more open and the east side of the building is cleaned up more. Looking forward to continuing the great work in the months to come! Thank you to volunteer Craig Bowen for his help and the Cedar Grove truck that we filled with 25 yards of debri!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Robert "Bob" Eugene Christian was called to his eternal rest on March 27, 2023, at the age of 95.

Bob was born on December 13, 1927, in Summit, Illinois. In 1949, Bob earned his Bachelor's degree in Education, with a minor in History, from Concordia College in River Forest, Illinois. In 1952, he graduated from Columbia University in New York, New York, with a Master's in Education Administration. He also pursued some additional graduate coursework in Counseling at Hunter College in New York, New York. Bob went on to faithfully serve the Lord as a Commissioned Minister.

Bob was instrumental in the starting of Hong Kong International School (HKIS), the first American-style education system in Hong Kong. In August 1966, he answered the call from the Board of Missions to serve as their first Headmaster, alongside seven teachers and 170 students from grades 1-6, at its temporary location in Chung Hom Kok. Only one year later, Bob welcomed 630 students from Kindergarten to grade 12, to the permanent building in Repulse Bay, Hong Kong.

In honor of Bob's tremendous service to HKIS, the Bob Christian Award was established in 2006, and is presented annually to the alumnus or alumna making a significant contribution to the HKIS community, their local community, and those around them.

For over 54 years, Bob served many Lutheran ministries, including Our Savior in the Bronx, New York (1949-1966); Hong Kong International School in Hong Kong (1966-1977); Seattle Lutheran High School in Seattle, Washington (1977-1994); Hope Lutheran in Seattle, Washington (1995-1996), and Mount Rainier Lutheran High School in Tacoma, Washington (1995-2003).

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Arleen. He is survived by his son David Christian; and his daughters Ann Christian, Rebecca Sandell, Lois Erickson, and Julie Christian.

Bob donated his body to the University of Washington Willed-Body Program. His remains are in their care.

There will be a memorial service to honor Bob at Hope Lutheran Church in West Seattle (4456 42nd Ave. SW, Seattle, WA 98116), on Saturday, April 22, at 3 p.m., with a reception to follow in the gym of Seattle Lutheran High School (4100 SW Genesee St., Seattle, WA 98116).

"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." - John 1:14 (NIV)

Serving the Lord and His Church,
Rev. Dr. Paul Linnemann
Northwest District President

Dear Alumni and Friends of Seattle Lutheran High School,

Yesterday, our long-time brother in Christ and founding principal of Seattle Lutheran High School went to be with our Lord. Bob was the principal at Seattle Lutheran from its opening in 1978 until 1994. Bob dedicated his life to the service of young men and women at Lutheran schools in The Bronx, Hong Kong, Seattle, and Tacoma. He also helped to start three of those schools. He was a true Saint.

Whatever you're doing right now, I hope you can pause for a few minutes to reflect on the contributions of this great man and pray for God's peace for his family and friends during this time.

We will provide further details about a memorial service as soon as that information becomes available.

Blessings in Christ,
Patrick Gehring
