Why does Alzheimer's hit some brain regions harder than others?

There is scientific debate about how Alzheimer's starts and spreads through the body. Is it mostly driven by a person's genetics making certain regions more fragile, or the disease spreads through the brain's wiring like a chain reaction?

The Raj Lab at University of California, San Francisco used gene expression data from our Human Brain Atlas to test both ideas at once. They found that both are right, but you can only see the genetic signal after you account for the wiring.

The study, published in Brain, could point to new drug targets by revealing that genes previously thought to be irrelevant to Alzheimer's actually have a real, hidden effect on where tau tangles form.

Multiple myeloma survivors often stay vulnerable to infections for years after treatment ends.

Our researchers, working with Fred Hutch, tracked patients for two years and found that their bone marrow, where immune cells are made, stayed suppressed long after remission.

It may explain why half of patients didn't respond well to their flu shot but did respond to the COVID vaccine. This finding has researchers hopeful that a change in formulation of the flu vaccine could help multiple myeloma survivors bounce back faster.

Ketamine is used in general anesthesia, pain management and increasingly as a therapy for treatment-resistant depression. But why does it not impact everyone the same way?

In a study published today in Science, researchers found that ketamine increases neuroplasticity in female mice, but not males. In female mice recovering from ketamine sedation, microglia become markedly more active, interacting with surrounding neurons and making room for new synapses to form. Male mice showed no such response.

If it holds in humans, it could reshape how we approach assessing treatments.

The study was a collaboration between the Institute of Science and Technology Austria - ISTA and the Allen Institute.

We often think of human cells as self-contained. DNA stays put in the nucleus and is passed down only through division. New research is challenging that.

Scientists at the Children’s Research Institute at UT Southwestern and the OMRF discovered that DNA can travel from one cell to another through bridge-like nanotubes. Once in its new home, it can integrate into the new cell's genome and change how it functions.

The team used our fluorescently tagged stem cell lines (TUBA1B and LAMINB1) to confirm the phenomenon in stem cells and trace the transfer in real time.
