The Orpheus Ensemble is an opera outreach program at the University of Washington; UW Voice students perform and inform about opera at local high schools.

The Orpheus Ensemble, now in its second year, is an opera outreach program at the University of Washington. The Orpheus Ensemble’s major goals are to provide our singers with performance opportunities like those they will encounter as they transition into Young Artist Programs, and to present high-quality student-led performances of scenes from operatic literature to the community. d Choral Department collaborates with local high school choirs to bring our group to perform for and interact with their students. Our Orpheus singers comprise a diverse group of talented vocalists from UW’s undergraduate and graduate degree programs, many of whom participate in UW’s choirs as well as our opera productions. We prepare opera scenes to be presented to a high school choir class or assembly. The scenes are selected with the skills of our UW students in mind, focusing on literature and roles that they would be likely to sing in the near future. The ensemble is an excellent opportunity for UW students to work on operatic literature that is immediately relevant to their education, and to hone their skills in interacting with an audience. An Orpheus performance begins with a brief introduction explaining key operatic terms and traditions, and then our students present their scenes and arias. Performances focus on music and acting, using minimal staging, props, and costumes. Many of the scenes have opportunities for audience involvement in the singing of the chorus parts, and the high school choir directors may choose to receive the music ahead of time or to have their students learn the sections "on the spot," during the presentation. Additionally, our Orpheus performers have the opportunity to interact with high school students as they might in a Young Artist Program run by a professional opera company. After performances the singers, pianists, conductors, and directors field questions from the audience regarding opera in general or the Voice and Choral Department at UW specifically. At some performances the UW singers will teach short voice lessons in a "master class" style, and lecturers may speak briefly on issues such as vocal health and balancing a performing schedule with academic demands. The Orpheus Ensemble is growing into a amazing outreach program to inspire kids and show them the magic of opera.

We're always up to something, and this week it was entertaining and educating thousands of young-uns about classical music (that "rocks"!)... Thanks to the many UW Chorale students who volunteered their time and talents, and special guests Heather MacLaughlin Garbes, Claire Machado, Alex Kaethler and Chris McCafferty!

Nearly 10,000 YOUNGSTERS will come to Benaroya Hall this week for our Link Up: The Orchestra Rocks concerts. Let's hear it for music education!

Friends,

I wanted to drop in and let everyone know that Orpheus has been hard at work on Amelia, and you will all get a chance to see their work showcased. Not only will we be performing a few times for high school students, but the school of music has agreed to let us have one on campus performance in Brechemin Auditorium. Come join us February 27th at 7:30 pm. Admission is free. So come out and see us and what we've been up to. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Hello one and all,

I have exciting news regarding The University of Washington Orpheus Ensemble. We have decided to perform Giancarlo Menotti's "Amelia Goes to the Ball". The show is cast and rehearsals will begin this coming quarter. Not only will we be performing for local high schools, but we have scheduled at least one on campus performance open to everyone. Stay tuned and the details will be shared as soon as their set.

The University of Washington Orpheus Ensemble was on the move yesterday with a mobile set of scenes presented at Issaquah High School. Thanks to Barbara Irish for inviting us to the event! Special kudos to the high school students who joined Orpheus on the stage in the final scene!

Artistic Director Kristin Vogel Lindenmuth will sing her final degree recital this Wednesday at 7:30 in Brechemin Auditorium at the University of Washington. Free of charge, all are invited, reception afterwards... and all music written in or around 1888 (1886-1890): Debussy, Wolf, Elgar.
