Yesterday, we opened the doors on another year at Giddens School, and what a joy it was to welcome our Otters back.

New backpacks. First-day smiles. Familiar faces. New beginnings. And a community ready to learn, grow, play, discover, and take care of one another.

There's something magical about the first days of a new school year. New classrooms. New friendships. Familiar faces lighting up with big hugs. A few butterflies in our bellies. And so many adventures waiting just beyond the classroom door.

To our returning Otters, welcome home. To the families joining us for the first time, welcome to the Giddens family.

So many families describe Giddens School like a warm hug. It's hard to explain until you see it. How do you capture the feeling of a place where kids are genuinely seen, celebrated, and lifted up? Where older students crowd around to admire a younger child's creativity instead of tearing it down? Where every child knows they belong and matter? It's not just what we say we stand for. It's what you witness in moments like this.

Today wraps up our final day of Back-to-School In-Service, and our Staffulty is ready for 2026–2027!

This week, we came together over breakfast, grounded ourselves in our values, strengthened community, prepared classrooms, and made space to remember who we are while stepping into who we’re becoming.

How a teacher sees a child changes everything. But especially in early childhood. When we look at our youngest learners, we don't see blank slates waiting for skills. We see whole people. We see their curiosity, their strengths, their way of being in the world. We build from there.

And we teach them from day one: everyone's different. Different backgrounds. Different ways of thinking. Different needs. That
difference isn't something to manage. It's something to celebrate and learn from. Early childhood is where justice-oriented thinking takes root. It starts with being truly seen. And surrounded by adults who are teaching you to see others.

Watch kids at Giddens and you'll see something: they actually care about each other. Not forced. Not performed. Genuine. A younger child makes art and older kids stop to celebrate. A student expresses themselves in a way that's totally their own, and peers listen and affirm. A kid is struggling, and the
community shows up.

That doesn't happen by accident. It happens when every single person - every child, every adult - feels genuinely known and cared for. When you're known, you have the safety to
care for others. That's the community we're building.
