A new partnership with the Seattle Art Museum is bringing SAAS students, faculty, and staff unlimited access to the Pacific Northwest’s leading visual arts institution.

Starting in the 2026-2027 school year, community members can visit both of SAM’s locations for free, opening the door for personal exploration and school enrichment.

Despite the hype, school doesn’t officially start until next week! Until then, I’m hanging up my social media duties and getting back to the bird-business I do best: building school spirit aka aura farming.

We’ll see all Cardinals back on campus Wednesday, September 2. Check the Opening Days link in our bio for orientation schedules and other key information. Oh, and if you haven’t already, download our new app: SAAS Pass.

All week, faculty and staff are reconnecting, growing through professional development, and preparing for the first day of classes on September 2.

While everyone else is working hard to get school-ready, the SAAS Cardinal (me) is taking over social media. Follow along all week as I try my best 🫠 it’s hard to post with wings.

Plz!

It won’t be long until Cardinals are back on campus for the 2026-27 school year. In the meantime, help us wish our recent grads the best of luck as they embark on their collegiate journeys.

SAAS students engage in a nationally and internationally focused college search that spans elite research universities, top liberal arts colleges, innovative STEM institutions, and leading arts and design schools.

More than 91% of the colleges and universities chosen by 2026 graduates are located outside of Washington State, reflecting a commitment to academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and opportunities across the country and beyond.

We might be just a teensy bit excited to see everyone again at our upcoming Family Summer Socials.

This year, we’re hosting two Family Summer Socials—one for each division. This is a wonderful opportunity for new and returning students and their families to meet, reconnect, and kick off the school year together.

RSVP and more information on the Opening Days page linked in our bio.

6 weeks of South Park Summer camp wrapped last week. Thank you to our SAAS student volunteers and faculty members who led the free youth program, offering arts, STEM, music, athletics, and other activities to hundreds of kids in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood!

This was a big year for the summer camp—and for our partnership with the South Park community. The redeveloped South Park Community Center and playfield opened this past spring. The site now hosts South Park Summer Camp, serves as an essential third space for the neighborhood, and will expand opportunities for SAAS Athletics.

Meet an alum making a global impact 👋

Margaux Johnstone ’21 is a Princeton In Asia Fellow based in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where she is immersed in a diverse and impactful portfolio of work. During the week, she teaches a public speaking course at Narxoz University, helping students develop communication skills that are essential for professional and civic life.

Alongside her teaching, she contributes research and writing on air pollution at the Sustainable Kazakhstan Research Institute, addressing one of the region's most pressing environmental and public health challenges.

Her students’ ambition, creativity, and drive to make a difference have left a lasting impression on her. Their enthusiasm and dedication remind her of students she knew at SAAS, reflecting a shared spirit of curiosity and purpose that transcends geography.

Professional athlete to independent school teacher may seem like a rare path. But at SAAS, it’s not uncommon. Several former professional athletes now channel their passion, grit, and drive for constant growth into creating a phenomenal educational experience for our students.

Take Ginnie Crawford, math teacher, Middle School dean, and basketball and track & field coach at SAAS, who draws on her background as a professional athlete on the regular.

In a math class at SAAS this fall, the 8th graders in the room had fallen completely silent. Their eyes were glued to Ginnie as she captivated their attention with tales from her time as a professional track and field athlete, competing on Team USA

There are 10 hurdles in a race, Ginnie explained. During practice, she’d run the hurdles 20 times. How many hurdles did she jump each practice? (Students did the math: 10 x 20 = 200.) That’s what it took to prepare for a race. That’s the power of repetition. “The more you practice something, the better you get,” Ginnie said. “This is why we have independent practice in math.”

A drive for continuous growth and improvement underlies it all. “As an athlete, you’re wired to try to be the best in the world,” says Ginnie, “and that goes anywhere with you.” As a dean and a teacher, “I’m always trying to better myself and create the best experience possible for kids,” she says.

Meet a SAAS alum in the Humanities: Jasper Peet-Martel ‘10 👋

Jasper currently works with Conducive Space for Peace, a Danish-based international NGO focused on peacebuilding and strengthening global civil society.

As a program manager, he leads a combination of strategic and hands-on project work, including designing and co-leading global initiatives, coordinating research and learning efforts, and supporting policy engagement with governments and multilateral organizations. Facilitation and relationship-building with people and organizations worldwide are among the aspects of his work he finds most rewarding.

When asked his favorite thing about SAAS, Jasper shared, "English classes at SAAS showed me how important clear writing and communication are, and learning to express ideas with humanity, introspective cross-cultural sensitivity, and clarity is something I rely on every day at work.”

We want to celebrate your post-SAAS journey. Share a recent life event, achievement or honor, a family milestone, a recent SAAS connection, or anything else that made you smile here: https://www.seattleacademy.org/alumni
