“雨上がり (Ame Agari)” is from Kodō Araki VI’s album 古轍 (Kotetsu), produced through the Jack Straw Artist Support Program. Kotetsu, releasing September 10th, is available for pre-order now. Join the artist at the Chapel Performance Space for a celebratory performance on Saturday, September 12th, with special guest Adam Robinson.

Whose Kindness Blooms

Blue, the sky of Ethiopia
White, the white star of the Somali flag,
Gold, my mother’s hijab,
Red, my bloodline,
Purple, the dreams I had when I was young
Green, memories of Ethiopia, the smell
of fresh vegetables in my mother’s garden.
My mother, whose kindness blooms
like a white spring flower,
whose eyes are brighter than sunlight,
whose hands work hard for her children.
Let us keep these memories of our sweet homeland.
