Michelle Purnell-Hepburn, our Associate Dean for Inclusion & Diversity, recommends How to Be an Antiracist by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi.

She highlights how Dr. Kendi defines racism and antiracism in ways that are poignant and tender, yet strong and quiet—challenging how these ideologies are portrayed in modern culture. A first-gen college student who once questioned whether higher education was possible, Janet T. Phan (BA 2009, MSIS 2013) carved her own way—earning two degrees from Foster, launching a global nonprofit, and leading a game-changing initiative at Amazon’s Project Kuiper.

She didn’t just navigate barriers. She broke them. Now, she’s paying it forward—mentoring the next generation of women in STEM and expanding internet access to underserved communities.

Her story reflects how mentorship and opportunity can redefine what’s possible.

Rain and snow doesn't slow us down! Our 3rd annual Fostering Inclusive Futures in Accounting brought together students from all over the country to network with successful professionals in the field of accounting throughout the Seattle business ecosystem.

Through panels and networking sessions, attendees gained valuable insights and mentorship into their career paths. The goal was not just to promote our programs but to support underrepresented students and reduce barriers to the accounting field and graduate education.

“I felt that I had these great ideas for engineering projects, and I wanted to figure out how to get them funded,” Tamaira Ross (MBA 2008) says. “I needed to learn how to go into a meeting and present a business case for my proposal.”

As Chief Engineer in Boeing’s Rapid Space Capabilities division and affiliate professor at the University of Washington College of Engineering, Ross applies her knowledge from our Technology Management MBA, UW Foster School of Business. She succeeds in both technical and business roles, leading a team that is, quite literally, reaching for the stars.

Kelsey Guo is a product designer at Cohere Health in Los Angeles, working to drive better healthcare outcomes through innovative technology solutions.
