The impact of a loss of balance can feel overwhelming. Not only is the quality of our movement compromised, but the quality of our life is directly affected. It’s as if we no longer hold dominion over our ability to move and act as freely as we once did. Balance is integral to our sense of safety, self expression and self-preservation.

It's fair to say that most of us have an idea or an image in our mind of what good posture looks like, but it's probably not so clear as to how one arrives at this heightened place of grace we call good posture. No doubt, we have all made the futile attempts to erect our spine, throw back our shoulders, tuck our chin and freeze. Seconds pass and we slink back into what's familiar and habitual.
How do we begin to unravel the conditioning and confusion that's bound to our image of good posture and move toward something better? We'll begin by redefining the term, good posture.

Who would benefit from this course
If you've started to notice changes in your posture and would like a more integrative and holistic approach to improving your posture and one that you can sustain and maintain as you continue to age, join me in my next ATM series, Potent Posture.
This series is ideal for anyone new to Awareness Through Movement classes as well as the more experienced student.
________________________________________________________
What you'll learn in this course:
*You'll quickly discover that good posture is not about maintaining a static, rigid and upright stance. Instead, good posture has the potential for action, spontaneity, self expression, dignity, poise and power.
*You'll learn that Improving your posture has less to do with this part or that part and learn that good posture involves your whole self - bringing all of your parts online into a more cohesive upright whole.
*You'll discover the difference between skeletal support and muscular effort and where these two worlds meet for ideal posture.
*You'll lean to stand taller with less effort and move with more freedom, vitality and ease.
Implicit in every lesson is the opportunity to learn to sense and trust your own internal experience as a means for refinement, self-care, insight and maturity.

Here's what one student had to say about how her posture has improved with Awareness Through Movement classes.
“About a year ago, I found Sarah’s class at Velocity Dance and started attending more regularly. For me, she strikes a nice balance between leading me through the movements and yet challenging me to interpret it on my own. Her voice is soothing, easy to listen to. Her attitude is open and encouraging. After each session, I feel taller and lighter; my head and shoulders are stacked more over my hips and feet. My posture feels upright and easy to maintain. The longer I attend, the more natural and easy movement becomes. This seems to be the kind of practice one can do indefinitely into the future, and one that will benefit me even more as I continue to age.”

Class starts tomorrow! FREEING YOUR ARMS
Register Here: https://sensingpossibilities.com/book/
The dexterity and range of motion available in our fingers, hands, arms and shoulders outperforms any other part of our body. All day long they do the heavy lifting and relentlessly perform one task after another. It’s not uncommon to experience discomfort, injury and for some, chronic pain in the shoulders, arms or neck. What we often fail to understand is that the arms are part of a larger whole – the torso.
When we begin to include the pelvis, ribs, chest and spine to help support the arms moving through space, something extraordinary begins to unfold. No longer does the torso sit dormant in the background while the neck, shoulders and arms do all the heavy lifting. When the torso comes to life there’s a cohesion between body and limb and that cohesion affords you the kind of expression, power and grace to last a life time.
Who would benefit from this series?
*This series is ideal for those who experience discomfort in their hands, wrists, elbows, neck or shoulders while working at their computer or other repetitive tasks.
*This series is ideal for gardeners, athletes or dancers who want to organize their arms more efficiently for the activities they enjoy and avoid injury.
What you’ll discover and learn in this series:
*You’ll learn how to access support from the ground up to free your arms for light and effortless action.
*You’ll recognize habitual movement patterns that don’t serve you and learn to organize and refine, moment by moment, a new motor plan – a seamless connection between your torso and arms.
*You’ll learn to take these lessons into your upright world where you can begin to apply them skillfully and patiently where it matters most to you.
I can’t wait to see you in class and to get started!

CORE PRINCIPALS / An elegant whole body approach to internal strength and exquisite action.
If an instructor, trainer or maybe you tell yourself to engage your core, what's your strategy? What do you do and does it improve the quality of movement you're doing? How do you know? How do you measure the improvement? For many, when they hear the instruction, "engage your core", it's not that different from telling someone to "stand up straight" or to " just relax". Intellectually, they know they need to change something to improve the desired outcome, but don't have a nuanced approach to get there. With their very best efforts in mind, they rigidly bolt themselves upright to stand up straight, go limp as a noodle to relax or powerfully contract their abdomen as if to prepare for an incoming blow. Willpower and a dramatic increase in effort are often the "go to" strategies for exercising the core, but what if you could employ a more skillful and efficient approach for developing core strength?
My upcoming course, Core principals, is designed to introduce you to a series of strategies and principals that can help you develop core strength or what I call internal strength. The course will focus on six muscles that are considered superficial and deep core muscles. What you'll discover along the way, is that developing internal strength can be far more interesting and dynamic than a repetitive slog of muscular contractions. In fact, the whole process can be down right creative, playful and pleasurable!
What you'll learn in this course:
*You'll learn the underlying principals and strategies for crafting a road toward internal strength.
*You'll Learn to sense the difference between a willful action and a skillful action and how each influences the overall quality of the movement.
*You'll come to understand that developing core strength/Internal strength is not an isolated event that lives in the musculature.
*You'll discover the role the skeleton plays and how to utilize the ground forces to produce simple and powerful movement.
*You'll be able to apply what you learn in this course to the activities you love, your workout at the gym or your daily routines.
I can't wait to see you in class and to get started!

The interface between you and the ground is ever present - a constant companion. The pull of gravity and the connection to the ground are some of the first sensations we experience leaving our mothers womb. Trees, plants, animals, insects, birds and babies rise up from the ground and find their place in the world. Through the course of our life, gravity begins to have its way with us in a more profound way. Our stature can erode; bowing and bending, shearing and swaying this way and that, until eventually, we make the final decent back to the ground.
It's easy to take our relationship with the ground for granted and yet how you interface with the ground determines the ease and efficiency in how well you can sit, stand, walk and move through your life. What if you could alter the trajectory of your decent by learning to engage with the ground in a way that provides more support, a quality of lightness, length and responsiveness to the world around you as you continue to age? Well, join me in our next series and redefine your relationship with the ground, so your future life can be a doorway to new possibilities and potential.
What you'll learn:
You'll learn to sense more clearly your relationship to the ground and how it influences your posture and quality of movement?
You'll learn to refine more specific points of support from the ground for ease and support in sitting, standing and walking.
You'll come to understand the difference between skeletal support and muscular effort and where these two worlds meet for ideal support.
learn to access the ground as a resource for leverage as you transition from one place to the next.
Learn to utilize the ground as a treasure trove of feedback that lets you know where you are in space moment by moment.
Come make some wonderful new discoveries!

We're going to shine a light on this lovely structure we call the rib cage and get to know it's true character. How it moves, its shape, its responsive nature to the ebb and flow of your breath and how it supports and interacts with other structures of your body. It's far more than a rigid cage that protects your vital organs. Your ribs move! Yet, for most people this fact remains elusive - a mystery. In our next series, The Hidden Wonders of Your Ribs, we're going to take a round the world tour of your rib cage and start to unpack that mystery.
What you'll discover and learn in this series
When the ribs are free to move and express their full width they act as a source of support for your head and a soft, buoyant shock absorber for your hips. Once you make these discoveries not only will you be standing with your head held high, your breath can flow unencumbered and you'll experience a light and quiet sense of support as you put one foot in front of the other.
You'll come to understand how the ribs play an important role in connecting the legs and pelvis to your shoulders and head. You'll learn to time, distribute and coordinate the movement of the ribs with the pelvis and shoulders for smooth, efficient and powerful action.
You'll walk away from this series with a new self image of your ribs and the role they play in making you feel for alive and responsive to the world around you.
I'd love to see you in class!

We've all experienced the discord and discomfort when our head, neck and shoulders feel out of wack. Stress, A chronic overuse of our short sighted vision from tablets, computers and cell phones and old habits and patterns of movement that eventually catch up with us, play a key role in degrading the comfort and function of these parts of ourselves.
Our physical and emotional well-being blossoms when the organization of the head, neck and shoulders can function seamlessly.
The benefits of our next series:
* A new ease, cooperation and range of motion between the head, neck and shoulders will come to life.
*With your head held high, you'll experience a deep sense of calm and composure.
*You'll create a new and improved image for your neck. One that's 24 vertebra long instead of 7. Your new & improved image will serve you as you sit, stand, walk and move throughout your day.
*You'll come to understand how you support yourself from the ground up has a direct impact on how well your head, neck and shoulders function together.

Every day, one way or another we lift, haul, heave or rise out of bed to meet the day. We don't give this function much thought or value - we've got more important things to attend to. Yet the ability to transition from lying to sitting is a primary and biologically necessary function for survival. Moshe Feldenkrais describes good posture as having the potential for action; the ability to move in any direction without hesitation or preparation. Not just in standing, but in sitting, squatting, turning, etc and even lying. This is a tall order, but it's an ideal worth considering, exploring and refining.
When was the last time you lied on your stomach, back or side and figured out more than one way to come to sit? You never know what kind of situation you might find yourself in. Your ability to be creative and resourceful in the moment, in the extreme sense, could mean life or death (This is a reality for many older adults), but mostly, it makes life easier and more fun.
Our next series, Transitioning from Lying to Sitting, will guide you through a variety of options to rise up and sit, but more importantly, it will help you make that transition more seamless, weightless and pleasurable.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS SERIES:
*You'll learn to orient, organize and time the many moving parts as a seamless whole from lying to sitting.
*You'll learn to access the ground as a source of power, a point of leverage and support as you transition moment by moment to sitting.
*You'll discover deep seeded patterns of movement that hinder your ability to transition from lying to sitting easily and learn how to craft a more seamless and efficient transition.
I can't wait to see you in class and to get started!
