The Goldfinch School

The Goldfinch School is a full-day preschool program for children ages 2-5 in Seattle, WA

Operating as usual

This piece is entitled "Birthday Party with Confetti," by one of our young three-year olds.

This week our students will journey into the world of fairy tales, filled with enchanting stories and imaginative play. This week will be focused on learning about fairy tales from cultures all around the world. We will be especially focused on developing language skills and igniting their creativity through storytelling and role-play. At the end of the week, each class will have dictated their fairy tale!

This week we'll delve into the science of light and shadows. Children will experiment with colors and shadows, sparking new scientific inquiry and artistic expression.

Today, Monday January 15th we will be learning about Martin Luther King Jr.!

STEAM for this week in the Pre-K class:

Sun bottles with water, food coloring, and oil.
Making a galaxy: milk and food coloring, then dip a q-tip with dish soap in and watch the food coloring spread around!

Art from this week:

In the Pre-K class we made our own constellations, shooting stars, and the Sun!

In the 2's and 3's class we have some planets and solar systems, star stamping, and making shapes with star stickers!

An update to our Art Gallery! This piece is called "Gumball Machine," drawn by one of our newly three-year old students.

A wise wondering from some of our students: how do our teachers know so much?!

We are continuing our journey of studying space with the stars and constellations this week!

Art for this week included solar system crowns, name rocketships, and marble planet painting!

STEAM this week: the pre-k class created their very own rockets using a stapled straw and a smaller straw to blow into to blast off their rockets! We also learned about craters on the moon and made moon sand and made craters in that by dropping marbles.

Meet our Lead Teacher for the 2's and 3's class, Ms. Sydney! Seeing Sydney at work is truly fun and engaging, and it is clear her students love to spend time with her. Thank you for all you do Teacher Sydney!

This week we will be embarking on the exciting journey of outer space!

Happy New Year to our friends and family!

What a wonderful year we have been having! Here are some photos from some weekly themes from earlier in the year. We look forward to showing many more memories with you!

Wishing all our families and friends Happy Holidays!

Yesterday our Pre-K class baked and decorated some gingerbread cookies. We were met with a surprise when we woke up after nap time and our gingerbread person had run away! He left us a trail of clues, including some crumbs by the window, for us to follow. We didn't end up finding him, hopefully we will hear from him soon.

For STEAM this week we made salt snowflakes with watercolors. What happens to the salt snowflakes when we add watercolors? The color spreads through the salt!
We also learned about balancing while making a floating city.

Pre-K Art Class: textured collages and finger painted holiday lights! We also celebrated Winter Solstice by coloring near the light of the lanterns we made a few weeks ago.

This piece, entitled Chocolate Present Factory, was made by one of our five-year-old students.

Holiday STEAM and Art in our 2's and 3's class so far this week!

STEAM activities included feeding Santa cookies to work on counting and trimming his beard to work on fine motor skills.

Another edition of Overheard at Preschool, we hope this brings a smile to your day!

This week we will be learning about different Winter Holidays, including but not limited to: Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, Hanukkah, and Christmas.

Some of the art projects from this week included tear and glue snowflakes and scented ornaments! For the ornaments, we used clay that we rolled and cut, then we pushed in holiday spices. Once the clay dried, the spices stayed and it smelled delicious.

STEAM activities from this week: making a hibernation book to learn which animals hibernate. And, creating symmetrical snowflakes out of toothpicks and marshmallows, yum!

It is time to start meeting our amazing faculty. Meet our Director, Bonnie. A complete expert in early child education, the children just absolutely love her. She also leads our weekly yoga classes! Thank you for your time and dedication Teacher Bonnie!

Les lundis nous faisons le français ! (On Mondays we do French!) We have a native French teacher come in and immerse our students. The theme we are currently working on is Birthday vocabulary. Past themes have been automobiles and the grocery store.

This weeks learning theme is Animals in Winter!

STEAM for this week: using shaving cream as a manipulative toy where we can practice writing letters and shapes. Also, attempting to make crystals with Epsom salt and water.

Some snippets from our Pre-K art projects this week: gluing paper on a jar to make a colorful lantern for dark winter nights and tinfoil + marker + water makes a beautiful staining-type texture on our snowflakes.

White crayon on white paper, but paint over it with water colors to reveal a hidden design! Cut and glue a rainbow candy cane! These kids are all sorts of ready for winter.
