ANNOUNCEMENT FROM HEADMISTRESS INDIGO BLUE:
I have decided to make official what has been informal for most of 2022: we are officially on a break.
I’ve been taking an informal personal Sabbatical for most of 2022 while I refocused my priorities.
But, I’ve realized I need a FORMAL Sabbatical to really get clear on what my path is, as well as that of the Academy going forward. So I’m taking a formal break from running all aspects of the Academy through 2023.
"WHERE WILL I LEARN BURLESQUE?" you ask? Check the comments below for a link to our Blog Post.
"HOW WILL I GET SUPPORT AS A BURLESQUE EDUCATOR?" If you are seeking 1:1 business coaching to grow your Burlesque School, feel free to reach out to me directly via email. While The Teachers’ Lounge was an amazing project and a great success, it is ALSO on Sabbatical for the next year, so there are no group coaching programs at the moment.
I remain available to support and encourage those who wish to go forward in the service of the art of Burlesque. Blessings, Tassels, and Sparkles to you all!
With Love,
Indigo Blue
Headmistress
P.S. If you're not yet registered for BurlyCon, DO IT NOW!

TEASE TIP TUESDAY: Research and Development: Take some time to review and research burlesque performers who paved the way for today’s beauties. A list to get you started: The 'Baby Dolls': Breaking the Race and Gender Barriers of the New Orleans Mardi Gras Tradition by Kim Marie Vaz, or Banned in Boston by Neil Miller. Maybe you’d like to delve into one of burlesque most favored patterns with Fierce: The History of Leopard Print by Jo B***s Weldon.

TESTIMONIAL FRIDAY: Chaos X Machinal Some folks get their feet wet before diving in to AOB 101 "I actually started performing burlesque around a year before taking 101, but I'd gotten to a point where I felt like I wasn't making progress. I enjoyed being on stage, but I was frustrated with my performances. I couldn't tell the stories I wanted to with my acts. I decided to take 101 at AOB to level up my skill, even though I'd been performing for a bit. I was a little worried it might not be worth it–what if I was already making all the progress I could expect to make? What if burlesque just wasn't for me? I'm happy I was wrong! 101 unlocked all kinds of new skills for me that I likely would never have learned on my own. More than that, it helped me think about burlesque in a totally new way and the art I wanted to make finally crystallized for me. I also formed a really strong bond with the other people in my 101 class, some of whom are among my close friends today. Taking 101 at AOB took my life and my art in a whole new amazing direction."

Tease Tip Tuesday: SHINE from the INSIDE. Your performance should always outshine your costume. It’s great if you can afford thousands of rhinestones, hire the best wardrobe creator, or have a ton of feathers in your headdress- none of this really matters if your act isn't polished and developed. Do the work of rehearsing in front of a mirror, knowing your story arc and really refining all of your movements and faces first.

TESTIMONIAL FRIDAY: D’Monica Leone! “My experience at the academy was so enlightening and affirming. To look at a slideshow and see a black fan dancer you just so happened to tattoo on your shoulder several months prior with no knowledge of who she was beforehand is a tell all sign I was doing what I was meant to do. Even through an injury, my instructors were patient and informative and helped me prepare for my recital as I accepted my disabled body. Even though I was a newbie, I walked away with the confidence of legends. My love for burlesque has evolved me into the loving, high spirited person I am today. It is my therapy in every fashion. You wouldn't know and love me as a whole if it wasn't for burlesque. “

TeaseTipTuesday: Not all Glitter is Equal! Cosmetic glitter is much finer than Craft glitter. The individual particles are usually rounded rather than hexagonal. Anything that gets into you eye could scratch, but Cosmetic Glitter is MUCH less likely to hurt your peepers! Leave the craft glitter at Michael’s or Joanne’s, and invest in ACTUAL, COSMETIC glitter. Available at your cosmetic counter or online, but NEVER in the hobby section!

TESTIMONIAL FRIDAY: @! "When I moved to Seattle in 2016, I struggled to find a community. I tried going to social events and meeting people online, but never found a connection. I was preparing to move back home when I decided I may as well take a class at the Academy of Burlesque. What did I have to lose? At the end of the tassel twirling teaser, I decided I would stay in Seattle a bit longer.
The Academy of Burlesque introduced me to the community I was looking for. The burlesque has helped me come out as non-binary, challenge my assumptions around beauty, and fall in love with my new home city." PHOTO Keith Johnson
