Have you ever knit two yarns that were the same weight and hit the same gauge… and still ended up with two totally different sweaters?
You’re not imagining it — and it’s not because you “did it wrong.” Most of the time, the difference comes down to fiber.
In my latest blog post, I explain why fiber matters and how yarn “behavior” shows up in your finished fabric — things like drape, bounce, softness, and durability. I also break down four fiber terms that can help you choose yarn with way more confidence:
Staple length
Crimp
Luster
Micron
If you’ve ever wondered why one sweater feels light and floaty while another feels sturdy and structured… this will click into place.

And tell me — do you usually pick the pattern first or the yarn first?

Creativity doesn't sleep. So why should your notepad? 📝✨
Right now, as you're reading this, you might be thinking of something you want to create, try, or remember. Don't let it slip away. Write it down. Even if it's 11 PM. Even if it's 5 AM. Even if you're in your pajamas, the cute ones with cats on them.💭
The best ideas come at the worst times. Be ready. ✏️ Photo by Beatriz Kim on Unsplash.

The softest cotton isn’t always the best cotton for your project. 🧶
Soft cotton can feel lovely, but if it’s loosely spun, it may wear down faster over time. A firmer cotton may feel less soft at first, but it often gives you more structure and durability.
💭 Have you ever picked yarn because it felt soft, then realized it behaved differently later?

Wool isn’t just one thing, and that’s often the part that gets missed!🧶
Different breeds and fleece types can create yarns that behave very differently. Some give you more structure, while others create more movement and drape When you start to notice those differences, choosing yarn becomes a lot more intuitive.

Let’s talk about one of my favorite knitting topics: yarn pairing and pattern choosing.
This sample is Terra Nova by Tanis Fiber Arts, knit in Madelinetosh Pashmina, and it’s such a nice example of how a yarn and pattern can work beautifully together.
When I’m thinking about pairing yarn with a sweater pattern, I’m usually asking a few simple questions:
What kind of texture does this yarn highlight well?
Does it have the kind of drape or structure this pattern needs?
How does the color movement interact with the stitch pattern?
What overall feeling do I want the finished sweater to have?
A thoughtful pairing can make such a difference. Sometimes it’s not about choosing the most complicated pattern or the fanciest yarn — it’s about choosing a combination that lets both shine.
I always come back to this question:
What does this yarn want to become?
Do you usually start with the yarn or the pattern first?

I’d love to celebrate Janet today. 💛
After taking my Mastering Your First Sweater online course, Janet finished her Flax sweater by Tin Can Knits — and she hasn’t stopped there. She also joined our Sweater Club community, is about to finish her first cardigan, and has already swatched for her third sweater.
Watching knitters grow in confidence like this is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
Janet shared this lovely reflection about being part of Sweater Club:
“I really get a lot out of the tutorial videos for each sweater. I can watch it over and over since it usually takes me awhile to understand some of the techniques. They are very helpful. I also like asking the community general questions and seeing everyone’s sweater selfies! I like that I can really do ‘my homework’ whenever on my own schedule since life sometimes gets busy.”
I love this because it highlights something so important: learning to knit sweaters doesn’t have to happen on anyone else’s timeline. We all need support we can return to, community we can lean on, and room to learn at our own pace.
Please join me in congratulating Janet on all she’s accomplished!

Soft cotton can feel so lovely in your hands, but it may not always be the longest-wearing choice. 🧶
A softer cotton is often more loosely spun, which can feel gentle and smooth, but may show wear sooner depending on the project. A firmer cotton may feel less soft at first, but it often brings more structure and durability.
