Value studies by students of the Modern Color Atelier.
“I believe that learning a visual language is nourishing at a deep, psychological level. Understanding color and shape relationships creates in us the agency to collaborate with our environment and experience. Whether on the field or in my studio, the act of organizing my sensations through painting is a form of devotion and awakening.
In the Modern Color Atelier, we seek to pass on the tools for artists to build visual form. We begin this journey by organizing shapes of light and dark. Seen here are examples of an exercise called Variations on a Theme of Three, where students learn to re-arrange just 3 values, showing how, even at this early stage of building an image, the poetic implications are deeply meaningful. We are involved in a personal, visual alchemy at every step of the way.”
– Kimberly Trowbridge, Director of the Modern Color Atelier

In this three-day intensive you will work with Mike Magrath, Director of the Magrath Sculpture Atelier, to learn a reliable and solid method for sculpting. You will make a full-scale copy directly in clay from a plaster cast which will be yours to keep. This class will be a hybrid combination, with some participating in the classroom via signup, while others may attend remotely. Lectures and demonstrations will be recorded and available for asynchronous learning. Finished pieces may be fired at Gage when complete.

Congrats to Modern Color Atelier Alum Maureen Ryan! Join us for the artist's reception on Sunday, November 12, 2-4pm.
Maureen Ryan on the body of work: "I developed the paintings in Xylem/Phloem over the past several years, amid the dynamic events of a changing world and while undergoing two heart surgeries. My paintings depict inner, outer, and energetic landscapes - of trees, animals, plants, and the vascular human body. My paintings evolve through drawings from observation and images from experience - internal pictures that arise in particular moments. The paintings meditate upon the vertical (under-earth to sky) and cyclical energies of life; the other-than-human beings who accompany, inhabit, and move through us; and the layered and intertwined natures of bodies flowing in, out, and back-and-forth across the boundaries of a momentary existence."
Why dedicate oneself to the painstaking mastery of fundamentals like anatomy, perspective, composition, color, and more when impressive results can seemingly be conjured with a mere prompt and a click?
