On my first trip to Krav Maga Winter Camp back in February 2025, I saw KMA founder John Whitman wearing this shirt. Took a photo of it and put it in my favorites, committed myself to buying it once I passed the KMA black belt exam.

My shirt arrived a couple of days ago.

The only reason I know about Krav Maga is because of this guy.

It was 14 years ago during our last quarter of our MBA program at UW Foster. We were daydreaming aloud about what we were going to do with our newfound free time and paychecks.

I told the person I was playing foosball with that I wanted to get back into Tae Kwon Do and go for my 2nd degree black belt.

From across the MBA lounge, Albert yells “ay yo you should check out Krav Maga!”

I did. I signed up for a free trial class at the closest school to me, and the rest is history.

We celebrated my black belt over Korean Fried Chicken.

At this point I’m just posting photos and videos to relive the experience for myself.

I’m truly thankful to everyone who flew down from Seattle to watch the exam and support me and Jerod, my test partner from PNW Krav Maga . It was a great mix of instructors, apprentices, close friends, and significant others. They were cheering us on, making sure we were hydrated, recording videos, and taking plenty of photos.

The night before the exam, we had our ceremonial visit to Moto Ramen for carbs and sodium. After the exam, we met at our VRBO for In-and-Out takeout and relaxing at the pool.

Through the yelling and hitting and general chaos happening all around us, I could hear their voices encouraging us and cheering us on. I was really glad to have them there to share in this extremely hard-to-achieve milestone.

2026 Krav Maga Alliance 1st Degree Black Belt exam. All handgun defenses from Levels 4 and 5. Just watching these videos has me wanting to do another exam. Far be it for me to wish time to pass quickly at my age, but I’m already looking forward to 2028.

2026 Krav Maga Alliance 1st Degree Black Belt exam. All Level 1-3 self defense techniques plus combatives, later ending with a sweep.

2026 Krav Maga Alliance Black Belt exam. Knife defenses vs live knife. This part of the exam put the fear of god in me. Yes, that is a real knife with a sharp blade and pointy end. Under the watchful and careful eye of the exam proctors, we’re expected to go 50-75% speed. Still, as you can see, I was being really careful and deliberate with my movements. Fatigue, stress, literal bystanders and people walking around, I didn’t want to make even the smallest of careless mistakes and hurt myself, my partner, or anyone around me.

I very much appreciated this level of realism, definitely a reality check after spending so much time training knife defenses.
