CTP, OPT, and STEM OPT are related to international students in the United States who are seeking employment opportunities after completing their academic programs. Here's a brief overview of each, along with their timelines:
CPT (Curricular Practical Training):
CPT is a type of work authorization that allows international students on F-1 visas to gain practical training and work experience directly related to their field of study. Students can apply for CPT after completing one academic year (usually two semesters) of their program. CPT can be part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during the academic year or full-time (more than 20 hours per week) during breaks (e.g., summer vacation). The timeline for CPT is flexible and can vary depending on the student's program and university policies.
OPT (Optional Practical Training):
OPT is another work authorization option for F-1 visa holders, allowing them to work in their field of study to gain practical experience. Students can apply for OPT before or after graduation, but it must be completed within 14 months of graduation.
The standard duration of OPT is 12 months, but students in certain STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields may be eligible for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. The timeline for OPT includes applying for it, receiving the Employment Authorization Document (EAD) card, and finding employment within the allowed time frame.
STEM OPT (STEM Optional Practical Training):
STEM OPT is an extension of the OPT program available to eligible F-1 students who have completed degrees in specific STEM fields.
It allows for an additional 24 months of work authorization beyond the initial 12-month OPT period. To apply for STEM OPT, students must have a job offer from an employer registered in the E-Verify system and work on projects directly related to their STEM degree.
The STEM OPT extension application can be submitted up to 90 days before the expiration of the initial 12-month OPT period.
The timelines for these programs can vary, but it's essential to plan ahead and understand the specific eligibility requirements and application procedures. International students should also work closely with their Designated School Official (DSO) at their academic institution to ensure compliance with immigration regulations and to receive guidance throughout the process. Additionally, U.S. immigration policies and regulations may change over time, so it's crucial to stay updated with the latest information from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and other relevant authorities.
