Congratulations to Dr. Maria Vignau Loria for successfully defending her dissertation!
The dissertation “Patterns and Trends of Deportations to Mexico: The Unequal Distribution of Deportability” undertakes a longitudinal analyses of the Survey on Migration in the Northern Border-Deportees or EMIF-Norte-Deportados (EN-D) from 2005 to 2019.

This , we want to highlight Sociology major, Vicky Chen.
Vicky has participated in various internships and research projects that have contributed meaningfully to social issues regarding access to public transit and youth outdoor education. Her experience studying abroad in London this past autumn quarter allowed her to expand her sociological understanding through a global lens. Vicky was also recently accepted into the American Sociological Association honors program.
Looking ahead, Vicky will intern with Earthlab where she will be serving as a STEM Education & Community Climate Justice Intern with UW GEAR UP Achievers and the Clean Energy Institute. Way to go, Vicky!

Yuanxi Li is a graduating Sociology major who has been involved in several research projects throughout her time in undergrad and is part of this years Sociology Honors cohort. Recently, Yuanxi’s presentation won first place at the CSDE Winter 2026 Lightning Talks where primarily graduate research was presented. Yuanxi’s work exemplifies the spirit of our department. Yuanxi will be joining our Department this fall as a PhD student.

Professor Theresa Rocha Beardall is making a difference with her work on fatal police violence against Indigenous people in the US. Her work was recently published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and featured in the Seattle Times.
