🔥 With increasing wildfire activity over the last few decades, a surprising new study led by SEFS researchers finds that contemporary fire years burn less than a quarter of the area burned on average historically in the Pacific Northwest.

🌲 Fire plays an important role in the ecosystem, maintaining forest health by promoting fire-resilient species across the landscape
🌲 Fire suppression practices became common in the 1900s, and dramatically lowered the amount of fire activity at all severity levels
🌲 Even in large wildfires, much of the area burned is likely contributing to forest restoration objectives by thinning the forest to reduce stand densities to favor larger fire-resistant trees
