OC3 September ‘26 Recap

September is in the books! We were booked and busy from collaborating with HSI Week to putting on our Werk Witch Bootcamp Series leading into our very own 9th annual campus drag show WERK WITCH! Plus we had an End of Summer Common Ground Picnic to bring the month to a peaceful and relaxing close before we hit October running.

Stay tuned to see what we have in store for October!

What is a piece of media (book, music, movie, poem, etc) that helps your identities feel represented, seen, and celebrated?

Visual art. I love seeing my community reflected in public spaces, and so I love murals, clothing, stickers, cars, and other forms of art where you know what it represents without any words.

What is a piece of media (book, music, movie, poem, etc.) that helps your identities feel represented, seen, and celebrated?
I feel represented by various art forms, and I really appreciate art. Being a mixed Indigenous-Chicana, it sometimes feels like I have to separate myself in identifying with various media- I feel like I can resonate with my maternal side of my ancestry being from the Pueblo Nation of New Mexico and I can resonate with my paternal side which is Mexican, but it’s hard to find media that represents both. A medium that I feel seen and celebrated through is Lowrider music. I’ve been thinking about lowrider culture since we recently had the car show here at CSUMB, hosted by El Centro. Much of lowrider culture is Chicanx- a political identity of those who are of Mexican descent, but also honoring one’s indigenous roots; this is not only me- being the first generation on my paternal side to be born outside of Mexico- but it also lets me embrace both being of Pueblo and Mexican descent. I grew up in proximity to lowrider culture and would hear lowrider music in my neighborhood, in the car and at home with my parents, and also in the places I would work during college.

Lupe came to join our OC3 team over the summer and has been a wonderful addition to the team and the space.

What is a piece of media (book, music, movie, poem, etc) that helps your identities feel represented, seen, and celebrated?
A piece of media that helps me feel represented is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Oscar Isaac voices Miguel O’Hara, and seeing a Guatemalteco in such an iconic role makes me feel seen. As someone who also holds Guatemalan and Mexican roots, seeing someone who is chapín in widely recognized films feels meaningful and is a reminder that our communities deserve to take up space and that we belong.

What is a piece of media (book, music, movie, poem, etc) that helps your identities feel represented, seen, and celebrated?
A piece of media that makes me feel represented is a book called Filipino Celebration: A Treasury of Feasts and Festivals by Liana Romulo. It is in the form of a children’s book, but it’s very informative and I like that it includes historical and foreign influences to the various celebrations both big and small. This book makes me feel like no celebration is too small and I think that reflects the reality of Filipino culture.

What is a piece of media (book, music, movie, poem, etc) that helps your identities feel represented, seen, and celebrated?
A piece of media that aligns with my identity is the Parker’s, it’s a black sitcom. The reason I feel this way is because every time I watch the show I can relate, whether it’s good or bad relatability! And it’s all black:)

What is a piece of media (book, music, movie, poem, etc) that helps your identities feel represented, seen, and celebrated?
A piece of media that helps my identities feel represented is a movie called Under the Same Moon because it reminds me of struggles that I didn’t have to go through thanks to the ones who came before me.

What is a piece of media (book, music, movie, poem, etc) that helps your identities feel represented, seen, and celebrated?
One piece of media that makes me feel represented is the film Mosquita y Mari (2012) directed by Aurora Guerrero. I think it beautifully encapsulates the initial stages of exploring your q***r identity within a space that doesn’t necessarily accept or encourage that kind of exploration. It was so important for me to see as a q***r Latiné person leaving home for the first time, the story holds a lot of memories that I resonated with.

What is a piece of media (book, music, movie, poem, etc) that helps your identities feel represented, seen, and celebrated?
One piece of media that makes me feel represented is a song by a Filipina artist Ruby Ibarra titled “Someday.” It represents the hope that a lot of BIPOC individuals hold on to while living through the struggle.
