Congratulations to MLEL and UW SAFS Masters student, Olivia Bible, on successfully defending her thesis today. Her study focused on developing methods for integrating drone data, machine learning approaches and spatial statistical models in ecological studies of the rocky intertidal. Our drone team spent the day at Willapa Bay working with colleagues from Pacific Shellfish Institute and staff from Pacific Seafood mapping oyster beds. Our drone team continued its drone work this week Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre They were joined by lab collaborator Dr. Emily Carrington from UW Department of Biology who is deploying instruments to measure variation in water motion and dissolved oxygen in the intertidal. This month the MLEL team is Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre in British Columbia, Canada. They are continuing long-term drone monitoring of intertidal communities in the area and beginning studies that examine how the three dimensional structure of intertidal communities can make them more or less susceptible to disturbances. Pictures can tell a powerful story. Our ongoing drone work in Southern California is helping document long-term changes in coastal habitat in the region. The first photo depicts a large group of ochre Seastars foraging on intertidal mussels in 1973 near Crescent Bay in Laguna Beach. The second photo depicts the same location in the intertidal in 2026 devoid of seastars and mussels. The remaining two photos show the location relative to the larger intertidal bench. Images are helping provide a better understanding of how much the coastal environment in Southern California has changed over the last 50 years.

Our drone team wrapped up their Southern California survey trip with drone flights on Catalina Island. They head back to Seattle tomorrow.

This week our drone team is in Southern California surveying intertidal sites with Cal State L.A. emeritus faculty member Dr. Carlos Robles. First up, the team is surveying sites in Laguna Beach. Later this week, they survey sites on Catalina Island with Dr. Robles.

Today, MLEL presentations continue at the 2026 Ocean Sciences Meeting. Lab PI, Dr. Corey Garza talks at 2:30 about our ongoing work in the project using drones, machine learning and image analysis to understand how spatial variation in pinniped abundance relates to spatial variation in white shark abundance in Monterey Bay.
