Join us Wednesday, May 13 from 4:00–6:00 p.m. at the Palenke Teen Arts Center in Seaside for an afternoon filled with food, fun, and live student entertainment, plus a special Chamber Ribbon Cutting at 4:30 p.m.

Today we celebrate our own Fernanda Cruz, a Senior who will be attending UC Berkeley in the Fall 2026, where she will pursue her dream to becoming a lawyer.

Fernanda joined Palenke Arts when she was 9 years old. She first participated in our Bilingual Chorus, later she joined the Hip Hop class, started individual piano lessons and eventually was a part of our Latin Jazz Ensemble. Last year, she helped us launch our first ever Palenke Arts Club at Seaside High. She is currently the accompanying pianist in the advanced strings ensemble also at Seaside High directed by our own John W**d.

Fernanda’s dedication, work ethic and amazing attitude are exceptional, and so is the support of her parents Elizabeth and Moisés, who are proud Palenke volunteers and deserve a shoutout as well.

The arts don’t just teach music or performance… They build confidence, discipline, and the courage to dream bigger.
We are so proud to have been part of her journey, and we can’t wait to see the impact she’ll make in the world.

Hoy celebramos a nuestra Fernanda Cruz, estudiante de último año de que asistirá a UC Berkeley en otoño de 2026, donde perseguirá su sueño de ser abogada.

Fernanda se unió a Palenke Arts a los 9 años. Primero participó en nuestro Coro Bilingüe, luego se unió a la clase de Hip Hop, comenzó clases individuales de piano y finalmente formó parte de nuestro Conjunto de Jazz Latino. El año pasado, nos ayudó a lanzar nuestro primer Club de Artes Palenke en Seaside High. Actualmente es la pianista acompañante en el conjunto de cuerdas avanzado, también en Seaside High, dirigido por nuestro propio John W**d.

This last December our executive director Juan L. Sánchez had the privilege of visiting San Basilio de Palenke/Palenge/Palenque in Colombia 🇨🇴. While at Palenke, Juan connected with community leaders, cultural centers like Kombilesa Mi . traditional healers and young dancers and musicians.
Palenke is considered the first freed city in the Americas. In the early 17th century, a group of enslaved people led by Benkos Biohó, believed to have been born in Guinea-Bissau, escaped inland and founded San Basilio de Palenke. This community has maintained their own language, Palenquero, a mix of Spanish, Portuguese and African Bantu languages such as Kikongo and Kimbundu for over 400 years.

Palenge was recognized by Unesco as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2005.

Este pasado mes de diciembre nuestro director ejecutivo, Juan L. Sánchez, tuvo el privilegio de visitar la comunidad de San Basilio de Palenque/Palenke/Palenke. Allí tuvo la oportunidad de conocer a líderes comunitarios, centro culturales como el Kombilesa Mi, curanderos tradicionales y jóvenes músicos y bailarines.

Palenke es considerada la primera ciudad libre de las Américas. Al principio del siglo 17, un grupo de cimarrones liderados por Benkos Biohó, nacido en Guinea Bissau fundaron San Basilio de Palenke. La comunidad ha mantenido su propio idioma, Palenquero, durante más de 400 años.

Palenke fue reconocida como patrimonio cultural intangible de la humanidad en 2005 por la UNESCO.
