If you are the only one emailing and following up, that is information. But most families read it wrong.

They decide the coach is not interested and quietly cross them off. Sometimes that is true. A lot of the time, though, the silence is not about your athlete at all. It is about the message. A coach opened it, found no real reason to reply, and moved on to the next one.

I read those emails for 11 years, so let me tell you where quiet inboxes usually start. Wrong content, the email says a lot about your kid and nothing a coach actually needs. Wrong program, you reached out to a school that was never a realistic fit, so there was nothing to respond to. Wrong timing, you contacted them in a window when they could not even reply if they wanted to.

None of that means your athlete is not good enough. It means the outreach needs fixing, and outreach is fixable.

So before you decide a coach passed on your kid, look hard at what you actually sent. That is where the real answer usually is.

Every parent I talk to has a list of dream schools. Notre Dame. Stanford. The Ivies. Programs that win on the field and graduate their athletes at the top of the country.

Here is what most families never get told. The athletes who end up at these schools were rarely the most talented ones in their class. They were the most prepared. They knew which programs actually recruited their position and grad year, they got on those coaches' radars early, and they had a plan while everyone else was hoping to get noticed.

Talent gets your athlete on the field. A plan gets them recruited by schools like these.

Your GPA decides how many colleges can even recruit you. Let's run the numbers. 📊

As a former D1 coach, scout, and recruiter — I lived this. I'd watch a player and LOVE them on the field. Then we'd pull the transcript... GPA wasn't there. Push to the side. Move on to the next athlete.

Here's the math every family needs on the fridge:

🟢 4.0 GPA → 94% of schools can offer you
🟢 3.5 GPA → 72% of schools
🟡 3.0 GPA → 51% — half the doors just closed
🟠 2.5 GPA → only 21% of schools
🔴 2.0 or below → 8% — and you're not qualifying at D1 OR D2

And the part nobody tells you: an academic scholarship can pay out 5X more than an athletic one. The grades aren't just keeping doors open — they're where the real money is.

Every coach worth playing for is thinking past the stat line.

The best programs are not just collecting talent. They are building a locker room, and they are asking one quiet question about your athlete that never shows up on a highlight reel. Is this someone we want in our program every day for four years?

That is good news for your family, because it means character, coachability, and how your athlete treats people are not soft extras. They are part of what gets recruited. Talent opens the door. Being the kind of teammate and person a coach wants to build around is what keeps it open.

Talent makes them an athlete. A plan, and the right character behind it, makes them recruitable.

Here is the money conversation almost no recruiting family has until it is too late.

You spend for years. Club fees, camps, showcases, travel, maybe a service or two. It is easy to look up one day and realize you are into this for five figures. And the question nobody stops to ask in the middle of all that spending is the most important one. What is it actually getting us?

Because here is the hard truth I saw over and over from the recruiting side. A family can spend ten thousand dollars a year and still have no target list, no coach relationships, and no offers. Spending is not the same as progress. It just feels like it.

The families who actually get a return are not the ones who spent the most. They are the ones who spent on purpose. The right camps instead of every camp. The showcases where the right coaches actually are. Every dollar pointed at a plan instead of scattered across hope.

Before you spend one more dollar this season, get clear on what it is supposed to buy.

If your plan for your athlete's recruiting is hopefully the right coach finds us, I need to be honest with you. That is not a plan. That is a wish, and wishes do not get kids recruited.

I sat on the recruiting side for 11 years. We were not out there discovering hidden talent. We did not have time to. We recruited the families who put their athlete in front of us on purpose, with the right information, at the right time. The talented kids who were waiting to be found were invisible to us, not because they were not good, but because nobody showed us they existed.

Hope feels productive because it feels hopeful. But it is the one strategy that has never worked in recruiting, and it never will.

The good news is the opposite of hope is not more talent or more money. It is a plan. And a plan is learnable.

Here is something I had to watch happen for 11 years on the recruiting side. Genuinely talented kids, stuck, going nowhere, while their families assumed the problem was that they were not good enough.

It almost never was. When a talented athlete stalls in recruiting, the problem is almost always one of four things, and none of them is talent.

The list, built around the wrong schools. The outreach, with no plan behind it or not happening at all. The read, no way to tell an interested coach from a gone one. And the timeline, doing the right things in the wrong year to matter.

That is the frustrating and hopeful part at the same time. Frustrating because good kids get missed for reasons that have nothing to do with how they play. Hopeful because every one of these four is fixable once you can see it.

If your athlete is talented and still stuck, stop questioning the talent. Look at the four.

"Let the athlete own the process." Then they get blamed if it doesn't work out. Nobody ever points out how messed up that is. 🤯

Yes, your athlete should be involved — it's their future. But they're TEENAGERS, not professional managers. They've never run a project in their life. Recruiting is a project.

They need help. And parents like you have ALWAYS been the help.

West Florida is one of the newest members of NCAA Division 1, making the jump to the ASUN Conference, and it is not arriving quietly.

This is a school with national championships across multiple sports, strong academics, brand-new facilities, and a campus that competes with programs far more famous than it. A brand-new D1 that already knows how to win.

Here is why I spotlight schools like this.
