Yesterday was a great day to harvest Brandon Cain’s soybean field he entered into our Most Crop Per Drop contest! We’ve got two more getting ready to harvest in White County but there were about 70 entered around the state! Thanks to all the farmers for letting us work with them!

Come out for Kids Day at the fair in a few weeks!

🎡 WHITE COUNTY FAIR KID’S DAY 2026 🎡

We’re getting ready for one of our favorite days of the White County Fair!

📅 Friday, September 18, 2026
⏰ 8:00 a.m. – Noon

Kid’s Day invitation letters and maps are being mailed to area schools and daycares, but we know we may not have contact information for everyone. If you operate an in-home daycare, preschool, homeschool group, or other children’s group and do not receive a letter, please consider this Facebook post your invitation!

And Kid’s Day is not limited to White County — schools, daycares, homeschool groups and other children’s groups from surrounding counties are welcome to attend too!

There will be lots for the kids to see and do throughout the morning, including:

🍕 ASU-Beebe Pizza Ranch – Learn how the ingredients that make up a pizza get from the farm to your plate.

⚡ First Electric Cooperative Electrical Safety Demonstrations – Demonstrations will be held at 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 a.m.

🚑 NorthStar EMS – Visit with our local emergency medical professionals and see an ambulance up close.

🚒 Searcy Fire Department – Check out a fire truck, equipment and learn more about fire safety.

🚓 White County Sheriff’s Office – Visit with local law enforcement and see a patrol vehicle.

🐮 Livestock Barns & Educational Building – Be sure to make time to visit the animals and exhibits throughout the fairgrounds.

⛳ Puttees Golf Simulator – Closest-to-the-Pin Challenge!

The golf simulator will be located in the Merchants Building and will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Each student will get one swing on the iconic Hole #7 at Pebble Beach, and the class represented by the closest-to-the-pin winner will receive a pizza party! Master Gardener volunteers will be helping keep everyone moving through the activity.

A representative from each participating school, daycare or group must complete the Puttees waiver. Please include both the representative’s name and the name of your school, daycare or group when completing it.

What to know about protecting stored grain from insect infestations!!
Stored grain insects can cause major losses, especially weevils that attack whole kernels of corn and rice. The best protection starts with thorough sanitation:
✔️Clean bins thoroughly before adding new grain; remove all old grain, dust, debris, and insects.
✔️Clean overlooked areas, including augers, subfloor spaces, bin floors, and areas around the outside of the bin.
✔️Once grain is ready to go back in for an extended period of time, treat empty bins with an appropriate residual insecticide before filling them.
If treating bin with insecticide, always check the label to make sure an insecticide is approved for the specific grain and use. For example, Malathion should not be used with rice storage (see MP 144 for insecticide recommendations).
Monitor stored grain regularly, since infestations can still occur during extended storage.
If grain becomes heavily infested, fumigation may be required.
Never enter a fumigated bin until it has been thoroughly ventilated, and follow all fumigant safety directions.

While I only knew Judge Lisa Brown for a few years, I could tell she was an amazing woman who loved White County and its people in it. She was a great supporter of Extension and helped advocate for it. Please keep her family and friends in your prayers.

The 2026 White County Fair is right around the corner! Start planning now to decide which field crops you would like to enter into the fair. I know some are not quite mature yet, but thinking ahead will help prevent scrambling at the last second! Bring your biggest and best of these crops listed below, and feel free to throw in any other fruits and veggies you have that you want to show off! It’s up to you to help us educate the public about agriculture! If you need help picking crops reach out to me.

Fair check in dates for all education building items are as follows:
-Friday, September 11th, from 8:00am-6:00pm
-Saturday, September 12, from 8:00am-10:30am
**judging of all items will begin after check-in is complete on Saturday, September 12th. Prizes and premium checks are up for the taking!

Attended a great training today put on by Bob Scott and Tom Barber to go over herbicide drift symptoms and signs at Jackson County Extension Center. This is a great refresher course for me to be able to touch up on my skills so I can help farmers and cooperators identify any issues early. What a great way to spend time outside this week!

Colorado we love you!! ⛰️What an amazing 2026 NACAA Annual Meeting/Professional Improvement Conference! I got to reconnect with so many agents from across the nation as well as went to so some great seminars and luncheons to take home ideas to my White County farmers and stakeholders! Oh and got to meet some cute furry friends along the way! Thank you for hosting us Colorado, can’t wait to come back to this beautiful state again!

Peacock farm (Bald Knob/Russell): 7 moths
Cain farm (north Griffithville) 45 moths
Peebles farm (south Griffithville): 113 moths

***Southwest Corn Borer trap counts are rising! If you have non BT fields in south Griffithville area that are younger than stage R4(dough), we recommend you scout your fields to determine if an insecticide spray treatment is needed, the threshold for 1st generation flight is 50 moths in a trap, and the threshold for 2nd generation flight is 100 moths in a trap.
