Today we had two students bring in 3 catfish caught in the Nanticoke River to school. Mr. Cohee demonstrated how to fillet the catfish to three different classes. The fillets were then sent to culinary to be sautéed in lemon, butter, and salt for students and staff to try. The fish carcasses were buried in the memorial garden to provide nutrients for the plants.

Last week SHS FFA and SMS FFA had a joint chapter meeting. SHS FFA Officers had the opportunity to teach the middle school FFA members how to safely shoot a bow and arrow. They also worked together to build wood duck boxes and plant seeds.

Yesterday we started preparing for our mallard banding project. We have 16 mallards using our school pond. Last year we were able to band three with DNREC Waterfowl Biologist Cole Tiemann. This year we are looking to band more and possibly deploy a GPS tracker on one the ducks so the students can track its movements. Another great collaboration with DE DNREC.

Yesterday our Environmental Science Pathway students had the opportunity to observe how to field dress, skin, and remove the meat from a deer harvested locally. DNREC Deer Biologist Sam Millman and Biological Aide II Darren Cook provided a very informative demonstration. The deer heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and deer fetus were shared with the medical pathway. The venison was sent to culinary to be marinated and cooked.
