Our second week at King Alfred's Academy is complete!
Each school day begins with the daily office for morning prayer. Students are then not only expected to absorb information, but also to articulate what they have learned in a writing they present in class.

"When I think about the upcoming first day of school now, I imagine welcoming nervous travelers to my home and inviting them to gather as friends around a fireplace. I worry less about the dissemination of information and instead, I begin with an invitation to hear a story, one that we’ll return to on the last day of class as we say farewell to each other and reminisce on our time together."
The Unspoken Meaning Behind the First Day of School | CiRCE Institute
In the 15th century, many students studying at a university sought accommodations at communal student houses. Each house had its own name and acted as both a residence and a place of learning. A master of the arts would oversee the house and provide academic teaching while also being responsible for...

On Thursday, August 24th, King Alfred's Academy will be having a half-day orientation where students will come in and receive their books and get an overview of what a typical school day will look like. Friday, August 25th, will be the first home day for students and Tuesday, August 29th, will be our first in-class day.
If you have not done so already, it is not too late to register for the 2023-24 school year. We exist to help parents provide their children with a classical, Christian education and we love the opportunity to serve you!

Materials are coming in for the coming school year. It's going to be (literally) epic!
We are still looking for just a few more students to add to our cohort that would help ensure the long-term sustainability of King Alfred's. Please consider how we at King Alfred's Academy could serve your student in providing a classical Christian education.

"In other words, to keep pace with the specialization—and the dignity accorded to specialization—in other disciplines, we have begun to look upon and to teach our language and literature as specialties. But whereas specialization is of the nature of the applied sciences, it is a perversion of the disciplines of language and literature. When we understand and teach these as specialties, we submit willy-nilly to the assumption of the “practical men” of business, and also apparently of education, that literacy is no more than an ornament: When one has become an efficient integer of the economy, then it is permissible, even desirable, to be able to talk about the latest novels. After all, the disciples of “practicality” may someday find themselves stuck in conversation with an English teacher."

King Alfred's Academy begins its second academic year on Friday, August 25th!
This year we will be beginning Year A of our 4-year academic cycle. This year, our students will be learning about ancient Greece and Rome in history, reading Dorothy Mills' wonderful text recently brought back into publication by Memoria Press.
In conjunction with ancient history, students will be reading classics of ancient literature including The Iliad, The Odyssey, and The Aeneid. High school students will be reading the Richmond Lattimore translation for The Iliad and The Odyssey and the L.R. Lind translation of the Aeneid. Middle school students will be reading the prose versions of the texts translated by Samuel Butler and David West, respectively.
For science, high school students will be taking Biology and middle students will be taking Earth Science taught by Jennifer Lovell using the Novare Science & Math curriculum.
For math, students will be using the Math-U-See curriculum based on their current aptitude.
For logic, all students will be taking Introductory Logic provided by Logos Press
Students will be developing their writing skills in all subjects by implementing the principles and practices of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) program.
We still have openings available and would love for your student to join us! For more information, please contact us through email at [email protected] or call us at (570) 346-2762.
