This past spring, Rancho 6th Grader, Anika Singh won the State of Arizona and the Southwest Division Daughter’s of the American Revolution American History Essay Contest for 6th grade. She was one of 8 semi-finalists for the National Daughter’s of the American Revolution American History Contest for 6th grade. Each year over 20,000 students across the country enter the 5 grade cohorts (5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th-12th) enter the American History Essay Contest . The National winner earns a certificate, medal and a check. Winners from all grade cohorts are invited to the DAR Constitution Hall for Constitution Congress to read an excerpt of their essay in front of a crowd of over 3,000.

This year’s prompt was Lunch With a Signer and asked the chosen signer the most important achievement their forming of the United States. Anika’s essay was a lively, time traveling tale with a debate back and forth on what freedom looked like for those enslaved and for women in the late 1700s. Titled “Of Liberty and Lunch: Dining with Thomas Jefferson,” historic speeches, letters, and proposed resolutions (alongside the Declaration of Independence) and was intermixed with historical accurate retelling of Jefferson’s complicated relationship to slavery.

Congratulations, Anika!

Our 7th graders spoke to first graders on the highlights of their class trips. They shared about the Washington memorials, Boston Tea party and more! We loving seeing our MS and LS school students connect!
