Yesterday our Gifted students took learning to new heights at iFly!

This immersive STEM field trip brought classroom concepts to life as students explored the science behind flight and skydiving. From identifying the forces acting on a skydiver to determining when those forces are balanced or unbalanced, students applied their knowledge of speed, velocity, and acceleration in real-world scenarios.

During a live wind tunnel demonstration, students predicted how size, shape, and mass affect terminal velocity, and then tested their hypotheses in action! They also discovered how engineers use wind tunnels to design and improve technology, opening their eyes to exciting STEM career pathways.

In the classroom lab, students worked collaboratively to measure mass and surface area, analyze data, and create graphs to better understand the relationship between frontal area and velocity. They explored variability, uncertainty, and experimental error while making meaningful scientific connections.

The experience culminated in an unforgettable highlight: each student suited up and took flight in the iFly wind tunnel after training with a certified instructor!
Through hands-on STEM labs like Ball Flight and Shape of a Canopy, students used geometry, algebra, and critical thinking to predict, test, and refine their understanding of flight dynamics.

Learning + curiosity + real-world application = an incredible day of discovery!

This week our Design My Future classes had an incredible guest speaker, Mike Pack, who shared his work in manufacturing custom prosthetics.

Students got a behind-the-scenes look at the process, from casting and creating molds, to working with plaster, specialized tools, carving, and vacuum forming.

Mike spoke honestly about obstacles he’s faced, including pushing through tasks he didn’t always want to do, and how perseverance shaped his career. He also introduced us to a long-term patient of his, a double amputee who has accomplished some truly amazing feats, including running over 100 marathons and hiking Denali and Kilimanjaro.

The message to our students was clear: pursue what you love, stay resilient through challenges, and remember that not all meaningful, successful careers happen behind a desk.

Thank you, Mike, for inspiring the next generation!
