Every Wednesday is Adventure Day at Umbrella Academy — and this quarter we’re hitting a different continent every single week. This week? Europe.

Here’s what our travelers packed into one morning:
🗺️ Mapped every country in Europe + the oceans that touch them
🏛️ Traced the Eiffel Tower, Venice’s canals, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa
✉️ Handwrote postcards home from their “travels”
🍕 Then tied on aprons and made real Italian pizza — dough, sauce, toppings, from scratch — while learning how pizza was born in Naples (fun fact from today: the original had no tomato sauce OR mozzarella)

No textbooks. No worksheets. Just 20 kids who now know where Italy is, how to knead dough, and that learning is supposed to feel like this. 🌍

Geography ✅ Culture ✅ Art ✅ Cooking ✅ Friendship ✅

Dean is fascinated by science and space — and lately he’s gone deep into liquid science. Growing crystals, mixing components, watching reactions unfold.

Here’s the part we love most: nobody assigned this. Dean chose it, and now he’s turning his favorite experiments into a live science show he’ll perform at our Fall Showcase in October.

That’s the whole model here: find what a kid can’t stop exploring, then hand them the tools and the stage.

Meet the Beef Bros. (Yes, they named themselves. No, we didn’t help.)

Every Umbrella Academy student gets up to $500 in real funding to launch something real — and this crew is building a jerky business from scratch: flavor testing, packaging design, their own website, and a commercial they’re filming themselves.

The Beef Bros hit the market at our Fall Showcase in October. Come hungry.

This week’s Adventure Wednesday took us to AFRICA! 🌍

Our explorers boarded their virtual flight and spent the day immersed in the continent: a presentation spanning all 54 countries, African-inspired art on canvas, a feast of traditional African food, and a live drumming circle that shook the whole room (sound on — that’s really them!)

We wrapped it up the only way you can: with The Lion King.

Our students learn best by doing. ✨

Jewelry, movies, gelato, cookbooks, skateboards — our kids are passionate about so many things, and we lean all the way in. When we invest in what lights a child up, curiosity turns into real skill.

Every student gets up to $500 for their own passion project — and we guide them through the whole process: mind maps, project plans, and budget sheets to gather their supplies and resources. They learn to plan it, price it, and problem-solve the way real makers do, and to experience what it takes to bring an idea to life.

Passion projects kick off Monday. We can’t wait to share what they create.

Reading, writing, arithmetic. And also: how to plant something and wait for it to grow. How to build a bridge that holds. How to find Portugal on a map. 🌍

We teach the basics because they matter. We just don’t stop there. A day here moves between fractions and the garden, between quiet reading and hands in the soil. Both are learning.

At Umbrella Academy, growing food is just the beginning. Our kids get their hands in the soil, then learn what to do with what they grow. Once these beds are full, we’ll be drying herb bundles all over campus — and every bundle will have a purpose.

Some for our chickens. Some hung in the kitchen for cooking. Some turned into crafts the kids make themselves — herbal scented pillows, little stuffies, sachets. And some we’ll just pinch off and snack on, right there in the garden.

Science, cooking, art, and care for living things — all from one raised bed. Dirt under the fingernails included. 🤎
