✏️ 𝐃𝐲𝐬𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.

A child may know exactly what they want to say, but getting those thoughts onto paper can be a very different story.

Writing is a complex process. It brings together motor skills, visual processing, planning, memory, attention, spelling, and written expression.

So when a child struggles to write, the question shouldn’t always be:

“Why aren’t they trying harder?”

A better question might be:

“What is their writing telling us?”

Dysgraphia can affect children in different ways, and difficulty with writing is not simply a reflection of a child’s intelligence, effort, or potential.

International Dysgraphia Awareness Day is a reminder to slow down, look beneath the skill, and get curious about what may be making writing difficult.

Because when we understand the child behind the handwriting, we can begin to understand what they need to succeed. 💛

A child struggles with handwriting, so we practice handwriting.

A child works slowly, so we tell them to work faster.

A child keeps moving, so we remind them to sit still.

It makes sense.

We see the struggle, so we focus on the struggle.

But what if we’re starting too far downstream?

Before asking a child to perform a skill, it can help to look at what comes before that skill.

Handwriting isn’t just about forming letters. It also calls on posture, fine motor control, visual processing, motor planning, attention, coordination, and regulation.

So when a child’s performance doesn’t seem to match what they know or what they’re capable of, there may be more to understand.

Instead of immediately asking:

“How do we fix this?”

Try asking:

“𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭?”

That question doesn’t mean lowering expectations.

It means looking for the foundation that can help a child reach them.

Look beneath the performance.
Get curious before you get corrective.

If you’re noticing a pattern in the way your child writes, moves, focuses, or approaches challenging tasks, we’re here to help you look at the bigger picture.

Maybe this is the biggest message I want you to take from September:

Don’t stop at the performance.

A child’s handwriting is information. Their posture is information. Their movement is information. Their avoidance is information. Their rushing is information. Their fatigue is information.

Not a diagnosis. Not a label. Not proof that something is wrong.

Information.

And when we begin looking at those clues together, we can start asking better questions:

What is making this task difficult?
What happens before the struggle appears?
What changes as the child becomes tired?
What other patterns are showing up?
What developmental foundation might be worth exploring?

We don’t lower expectations. We don’t blame the child. We don’t assume parents aren’t doing enough. We don’t jump to conclusions.

We get curious.

Because sometimes the most important thing we can change isn’t the child’s performance.

It’s the way we look at the child.

If you’ve been wondering what your child’s patterns may be telling you, let’s start that conversation.

We wouldn’t build a house by starting with the second floor.

We understand that the foundation has to support what comes next.

Child development works in much the same way.

Earlier experiences and skills become the foundation for later challenges.

And when those foundations aren’t fully established, children are remarkably good at finding ways around them.

They compensate.
They lean.
They move.
They rush.
They avoid.
They work twice as hard.

From the outside, we may only see the finished worksheet.

But the 𝐡𝐨𝐰 matters.

Because a child can complete a task and still be working far harder than we realize.

This is why we need to ask a different question:

𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐚 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞’𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐭?

That doesn’t mean lowering the bar.

It means understanding what helps a child reach it.

If you’re wondering what might be underneath your child’s performance, let’s look at the bigger picture together.

“I don’t want to” can be frustrating to hear.

But before we decide what that sentence means, let’s get curious.

What if the behavior is communicating something about the task—not the child’s character?

Maybe writing feels hard. Maybe the task takes more effort than it appears to. Maybe there’s something about the demand that we haven’t noticed yet.

That doesn’t mean every child who avoids writing has a developmental difficulty. It means avoidance can be a clue worth noticing.

Instead of:

“Why won’t you do this?”

Try:

“What is making this hard?”

Sometimes, changing the question changes what we see.

If you’re noticing patterns in the way your child approaches writing or other challenging tasks, we’re here to help you look at the bigger picture.

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐮𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠?

It may look like a simple activity, but there’s plenty to notice while a child is coloring.

How are they holding the crayon?

Are they using their other hand to help stabilize the paper?

Do they press very hard?

Do they change hands?

What happens to their posture or control after a few minutes?

These observations don’t tell us that something is wrong.

They’re simply 𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬.

And one clue usually isn’t enough to tell the whole story. What becomes more interesting is when we start noticing patterns across different activities and different days.

So this National Coloring Day, try something different.

Give your child something to color.

𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬.

Just watch.

Notice how they move.
Notice how they work.
Notice what changes when the activity gets harder.

Then ask yourself:
“𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞?”

Because sometimes the most useful information isn’t on the page.

𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬.

One clue rarely solves the mystery.

That’s why we encourage parents and teachers to move from isolated observations to patterns.

Not:

“What’s wrong?”

But:

“What might these clues have in common?”

That shift moves us from correction toward understanding.

The goal isn’t to become a therapist.

It’s to slow down enough to notice the child behind the behavior.

Look for the constellation, not just the stars.

If you’re noticing patterns and wondering what they might be telling you, we’re here to help you look at the bigger picture.

Sometimes the first thing we notice is the behavior.

A child is moving.

Rushing.

Avoiding.

Changing positions.

And it’s easy to decide what that behavior means.

“𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.”
“𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠.”
“𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.”

But what if we paused before making that conclusion?

A child who keeps moving may be looking for a way to feel more organized.

A child who rushes may be trying to get through a task that feels difficult.

A child who avoids coloring may be telling us that something about the activity feels hard.

There isn’t always one explanation.

And one behavior doesn’t tell us the whole story.

But it can give us a place to start.

𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, “𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐈 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬?”

Try asking:

“𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠.”

That small shift—from correcting to getting curious—can change what we notice about a child.

Because behavior isn’t always something to stop.

Sometimes, it’s information.

If you’re noticing patterns in the way your child moves, writes, focuses, or approaches certain activities, let’s look at the bigger picture together.

One of the hands-on activities gave participants a small glimpse into what it can feel like when fine motor skills are challenging. Wearing mittens, they were asked to complete a skilled activity—something that seems simple until your hands suddenly can’t do what your brain is asking them to do!

For many children, tasks that look “easy” from the outside can require an incredible amount of effort.

Understanding the connection between movement, motor skills, attention, regulation, and learning helps us look beyond the task itself and ask a more important question:

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝?

Thank you to the Children's Service Network of Arizona for the opportunity to learn, connect, and share with such a wonderful group of professionals who support children and families. 💙
