I never cared for this game as I saw 2nd graders throw fits when they couldn’t play it at after school “Coding Club” and knew of a 6th grader who had to go to inpatient digital addiction rehab out of state.

Feel Good Story ahead…As a former K-12 business education teacher, I sometimes wonder if I made an impact with my “elective” courses that I taught. Yesterday, a First Class passenger was looking at me longer than usual during pre-flight. When I finished the safety demo, she asked me if I taught at Stillwater High School. I said yes and it turns out she was a student in my keyboarding class over 18 years ago! I do remember her! My flying partner asked me if she was a good student and I said “Of course! Look where she is sitting!😉
She and I got a chance to talk during the flight. She is married with two kids! She told me she was soooo glad she took my keyboarding class, uses her keyboarding skills every day in her tax litigation career and that she thought it was fun! We talked about how I was adamant that they learn the correct finger placement so they would type faster and more accurate and she agreed❣️ She said the business classes (that we teachers fought so hard for) SHOULD be required for graduation and was still surprised they are not 😡She was on her way to speak at a tax litigation event in Ohio!
It’s few and far between sometimes when we run into former students (especially since I don’t live in Minnesota anymore), but my job as a flight attendant has brought me together with three former students so far…one who was in my flight attendant training (Maddie), one who is now a Delta pilot (Dillon) and now Mackenzie Pilla!
As teachers, the accolades and appreciation we receive from former students when we are lucky enough to run into them is more than you know as they also become “our kids” during the years we had them as students and we are very proud! When we repeatedly told them, “Someday, you’re going to be glad you learned this business skill/knowledge“ and they tell you 18 years that they ARE glad, is one of the greatest gifts a teacher could receive! The “thank you” and hug Mackenzie initiated as she deplaned made all those years worth it❣️🤗
So, reach out, say thank you and be grateful for the people who had your best interest at heart when you were younger…they’d love to hear from you and know that their efforts mattered. Below are some of business ed colleagues I’ve been privileged to work with that should be acknowledged as well: 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

It’s been over six years since my Girls Only Coding Club was born! Sanya, Stella and Sofia, my 6th grade inspirations for the club, have since graduated high school now. Back then, I gave credit to Hadi Partovi for his creation of Code.org and sent him the links to our AZFamily news stories. He shared the links on his page and we went viral in 24 hours being shared all around the world (89 countries)! We were what you could say “Insta-famous” before Instagram!
So, yesterday, the last person walking off my plane in North Dakota was wearing a Code.org baseball cap and a mask. I said, “Oh, I know Code.org!” And then I looked at his eyes and said, “Oh! Wow! You’re Hadi Partovi!!!!” I’ve only ever seen one picture of him but something told me it was him behind that mask! He said, quite surprised, “Yes, I am!” I then told him it was an honor to meet him and how much of a part his Code.org played in my teaching career and thanked him for all he had done for kids (my students) and coding. What a small world, right?! And who would have ever thought I would get a chance to meet him in person and finally say thank you!
I’ve often told people that the true recognitions of teachers coming from school administration, parents, or students can be few and far between and you often wonder if the work that goes into that profession is all worth it....and it’s often years later when you find out the positive impact you had on a student and/or their family. Meeting Mr. Partovi brought my teaching career full circle as the GOCC was my personal highlight accomplishment and he (Code.org) made that possible! I hope, by our chance meeting yesterday, he, too, realizes the impact and that all his efforts made it worth it as well and that even though my thank you to him was six years later, he not only impacted my students, but he impacted me as a coding teacher! Thank you, again, Code.org and Mr. Hadi Partovi!

Excited to see and hear from the women astronauts and women NASA employees taking part in this Space X launch today on ABC News Live!
Let us also celebrate the women behind the scenes (past and present) at NASA, especially the women “coders” portrayed in the movie “Hidden Figures,” who are such an integral part in our space program!
Applause and support for the girls who will be inspired to pursue careers as pilots, astronauts, and in technology careers by this launch!
