Here’s the process I recommend to get bookkeeping experience before working with a client:
1️⃣ Learn QuickBooks
Don’t try to learn every accounting software. Focus on QuickBooks first and dedicate time to completing the training. It’s one of the most widely used bookkeeping programs for businesses, and becoming comfortable with it will give you a strong foundation.
2️⃣ Get QuickBooks Certified
Certification gives you a goal to work toward and helps build your confidence. And remember, the exam is open book! You can use your notes, QuickBooks resources, and other study materials while taking it.
3️⃣ Practice with the QuickBooks Sample Company
This is where you’ll start putting what you’ve learned into practice. Categorize transactions, create vendors & chart of accounts, reconcile accounts, and run reports. It’s a safe place to make mistakes and learn before working with real clients.
4️⃣ Set Up Your Own Books
One of the best ways to build confidence is by using QuickBooks for your own finances. You’ll get hands-on practice categorizing transactions, reconciling accounts, and generating reports, the same types of tasks you’ll do for clients.
The biggest mistake I see is people waiting until they feel “ready.” Confidence doesn’t come from memorizing everything or watching one more video. It comes from practicing. Every time you open QuickBooks, you’re building the skills you’ll use with future clients.

Being a present mom of 3 and running a real business don’t cancel each other out, but I don’t have the same approach to business as someone who doesn’t have kids. Let me explain.
I don’t wake up at 4am.
I don’t grind until midnight.
I am not inside the business 24/7
I built my business to fit my life:
* 1–2 hours of focused work a day
* no constant notifications
* lots of help and solid systems
* saying “no” to money that costs my peace
And I give my team (mostly moms) the same grace. We’re not brain surgeons. The work can wait.
If you’ve been trying to “hustle like everyone else” and it’s just not working in your season… you’re not broken. You just need a different model.
That’s exactly why I teach moms how to start virtual bookkeeping businesses they can run in school hours or during nap windows without burning out.

I’m excited to be partnered with to give my community a simple way to open business checking accounts that actually make sense for small and medium‑sized businesses.
One of the first real “I’m a business owner now” steps is opening a separate business checking account for your bookkeeping business. It keeps your books clean, makes taxes easier, and lets you pay yourself clearly from business → personal.
You can absolutely open a business account at your personal bank or credit union.
Many of my students also like using an online business checking account that Is designed for small–medium businesses:
– Simple and free to open
– Lets them create estimates and invoices and get paid
– Works with payment processors and tap‑to‑pay
– Allows free standard ACH transfers between business and personal (fees only for instant options like wires)

I didn’t choose bookkeeping because I loved numbers.
I chose it because I wanted to be home with my kids. 🤍
I started with zero experience looking for something flexible I could do during nap time that could still bring in some income from home.
Now, years later, I’ve built my life around being there for them… and that’s the real win.
