Valley Alternative Learning Transitioning School

Valley Alternative Learning Transitioning School Alternative school in the Nebraska Panhandle serving the needs of ten surrounding districts. Program Description
What is an “alternative education”?

An alternative school is one which offers the same basic curriculum as the “mainstream” school but uses alternative delivery methods. Just as some of us learn best visually, and others auditorily or kinesthetically; student’s unique characteristics cause them to learn best in situations which support their individual needs. While the structure of the alternative pro-gram may vary from site to site, the following common effective characteristics have been identified:
* Small size
* Supportive environment
* Individual educational planning
* Autonomy and democratic structure
* Well defined standards and rules
* Accountability and constant evaluation
* School environment which is safe, disciplined and drug free. Effective alternative schools serve a segment of the population whose needs differ from others.

🌟 Building skills. Discovering values. Shaping futures. 🌟
Last week, Lourdes and Nicole from ESU 13’s Psych & Behavioral Health Unit kicked off what will soon become biweekly group sessions with VALTS students! 💬🧠

The first session focused on values—helping students explore what matters most to them and how those values can guide the choices they make throughout life.

One value stood out: SUCCESS. 🎓✨ Several students shared that success is a top priority for them, reflected in their commitment to the VALTS program, their goal of graduating, and their plans to build meaningful careers in the future.

We’re excited to see these students continue to grow, strengthen their social-emotional skills, and move with purpose toward their goals! 💙

🍫 100 Rees’sons Why You’re Great! 🍫

Dr. Derek Peil recently gave our VALTS staff a sweet reminder of just how much they are appreciated! Each staff member received a personalized “100 Reese’sons Why You’re Great” thank-you featuring a special quote from one of our students. 💙

What better way to recognize the people who make such a difference in the lives of our students than with a little chocolate and some heartfelt words straight from the students themselves? 🧡

Thank you, VALTS staff, for all the ways you show up, encourage, support, and make a difference every day. We appreciate you more than 100 Rees’sons could ever say! 🍫✨

🎉 What a way to kick off the 2026-2027 school year! 🎉

VALTS students had an awesome first day filled with fun, connection, and plenty of team spirit! We started the morning with donuts and a Welcome Back/Orientation, followed by activities focused on our VALTS Values and team building.

Then it was time to enjoy some friendly competition with yard games and wrap up the day with a BBQ! 🌭☀️

We’re excited for the year ahead and can’t wait to see what this group accomplishes! Welcome back, VALTS students! 💙

We are proud to share that VALTS presented a check for $3,395.35 to VFW Post 1681 from proceeds raised during our VALTS for Veterans Golf Ball Drop Fundraiser! 🇺🇸⛳

This event was a tremendous success thanks to the generosity of our community, sponsors, supporters, and everyone who purchased golf balls or attended the event. Your support helped create a meaningful opportunity for our students to give back to those who have served our country.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this fundraiser possible and to VFW Post #1681 for the continued impact you make in the lives of veterans and our community. We are grateful to partner in supporting those who have sacrificed so much.

Yesterday, our VALTS students had the honor of presenting two handmade quilts to local veterans through the incredible Quilts of Valor Foundation program.

These quilts represent more than warmth — they are a symbol of appreciation, service, sacrifice, and gratitude for those who have served our country. Our students were proud to take part in this meaningful experience and help recognize two deserving veterans for their commitment and dedication.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this special presentation possible and for helping our students learn the importance of honoring and supporting our veterans.
