From the moment 1440 Adjunct Faculty member Tony Skrelūnas first stepped onto campus, he felt a deep sense of connection to the history and healing that lives in our redwoods. Tony – a storyteller, global systems architect and author of Stone Breath: Ancestral Code for Modern Lives – believes that caring for our communities begins with preserving the stories, traditions, and knowledge that connect us across generations, creating a future rooted in both abundance and sustainability.
Tony finds inspiration in conversations with cultural leaders from around the world, exploring food preservation, language revitalization, and ancestral cultivation practices. Through these shared experiences, he has become even more aware of the role we each play in honoring the wisdom of those who came before us and ensuring it continues to guide generations to come.
Through storytelling and teaching, Tony invites us to slow down, embrace curiosity, and deepen our connection to the wisdom that shapes us. Join him for an immersive community workshop on August 28, August 29, or both, as he explores reflection and knowledge we carry forward. Together, we’ll consider how what we preserve today can help shape a more connected, resilient tomorrow. Learn more through the link: https://www.1440.org/events.

Each heart of 1440 helps make our campus the special place it is, and one of those hearts is Jason Schwintosky, our Maintenance Technician. This September marks one year since Jason joined the 1440 team.
Jason's favorite part of working at 1440 is being surrounded by the Santa Cruz Mountains, where he enjoys exploring the land and serving as a steward of its natural beauty. It's no surprise that his favorite Signature Classes are the hiking experiences that invite others to connect with nature in the same way.
He's also passionate about supporting our Helping Hands program, one of 1440's philanthropic initiatives that gives back to our local community. When he needs a moment to recharge, you'll often find him by the creek near the Cathedral, one of his favorite places on campus because of its calm and healing energy.
Outside of work, Jason enjoys skateboarding, attending concerts, spending time with his family, and caring for his home garden. Lately, he's been exploring the works of different literary authors and learning about different language models.

What do you notice when you slow down and Wonder Well? The grain of the wood, the layers of stone, the patterns in nature, and the details that quietly shape each space all tell a story. Wonder Well is an invitation to look a little closer, finding inspiration in the textures that surround us every day.
Discover a Wonder Well experience designed to help you reconnect with curiosity, presence, and the world around you. Explore upcoming programs or co-create your own learning gathering at 1440.org.

Nestled within the Hollow, "Reaching for the Light " and "Wise Old Woman" were thoughtfully positioned to embrace the ever-changing rhythms of the forest. As light streams through the trees, the sculptures shift with the landscape, creating a different experience throughout the day. It's a quiet invitation to slow down, look a little closer, and experience how nature and art can deepen our sense of Wonder Well. Wander through the Hollow during your next visit and see how each moment offers a new perspective.

There’s still time for your child to join us in the Teaching Kitchen for an immersive summer learning experience that sets the foundation for living well! Through the 1440 Nourishing Generations Young Chef Academy, we’re helping emerging culinarians discover that healthy eating can be fun, flavorful, and empowering. Over the next three weeks, kids ages 7-13 will continue exploring the connection between food and wellness through hands-on cooking, kitchen skills, and the joy of creating nutrient-rich (and yummy) meals.
Scholarships are available to help more young chefs take part. Enjoy images from week one (The Great Food Adventure) here, and read about the remaining curriculum opportunities at www.1440.org/nourishing-generations-young-chef-academy-2026.
